Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Risk Management Services plays a key role in the management of the University's entire risk portfolio. Many other campus units share in this responsibility, and Risk Management partners with those units to achieve a coordinated, cohesive and enterprise-wide approach to managing all University risks. By providing this team-oriented approach, our campus customers are assured they have the full force of the University's risk management resources behind them.
Position Summary
The Risk Management Manager for the University is responsible for overseeing the majority of the University's insurance programs, from purchasing appropriate coverage to adjusting claims. The risks the University faces are constantly evolving, requiring strategies that remain flexible and responsive. Each campus unit has unique risks, and the department works proactively with units to identify, assess, and manage those risks through a combination of prevention, acceptance, avoidance, and/or transfer strategies. Many programs are self-insured or carry large deductibles, and this position ensures that necessary internal funding requirements are in place for the University's portion of a loss. Some programs are state administered, requiring liaison between the University and the State of North Carolina. The position manages approximately 95 insurance policies including Accident & Health, Property - All Risk, Automobile Liability & Collision, Boiler and Machinery, and Ocean Marine covering university personnel and 350+ on- and off-campus buildings.

The position's responsibilities have expanded to include strategic program management, operational oversight, and direct supervision of four (4) full-time employees ( FTE). This includes responsibility for staff oversight, performance management, workload coordination, and professional development to ensure effective delivery of insurance and risk management services. The position now leads the development and implementation of risk management strategies across the University, provides guidance on complex risk decisions to leadership, and coordinates with multiple departments to ensure alignment with university-wide safety and compliance objectives. This includes interpreting regulations, negotiating with external insurers, overseeing self-insured programs and large deductibles, and ensuring appropriate financial planning for retained risk.

The position also manages operational programs, including the administrative duties of the Dosimetry Program and EHS administrative functions, with responsibility for coordinating workflows, executing projects, ensuring data integrity and compliance, and achieving effective program outcomes.

These expanded duties, including supervisory authority, institutional risk strategy leadership, and operational program management, reflect a level of complexity, decision-making authority, and accountability consistent with the University Program Manager classification.
