Job Description

We have an opening for anentry to early career Safety Basis Analystto support implementation of 10 CFR 830, Subpart B, and other Department of Energy (DOE) and LLNL requirements at Hazard Category 2/3 nuclear facilities and Less-Than-Hazard-Category-3 facilities containing radiological, chemical, and explosive hazards. This position is within the Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) Directorate.

This position will be filled at eitherlevel based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

  • Assist in the review and maintenance of technical documents such as safety basis calculations, Unreviewed Safety Question (USQ) documents, Documented Safety Analyses (DSA), Technical Safety Requirements, and nonnuclear safety basis documents.
  • Perform hazard analysis under supervision for processes, operations, materials, wastes, and potential energy sources used in facilities.
  • Propose appropriate engineering and/or administrative controls for the hazards identified.
  • Gather and analyze data and information that is well defined in support of work activities and deliver results in the form of documents, calculations, recommendations, and potential corrective actions.
  • Perform technical/scientific assignments of limited complexity that require analysis and creativity and provide technical support to engineers and scientists in scientific research and development projects and/or ongoing operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the TSS.2level

  • Prepare USQ documents and perform hazard and accident analyses for 10 CFR 830 compliant DSAs with limited direction.
  • Provide technical input on operational issues that requires integrating applicable regulations and DOE standards relevant to safety basis.
  • Serve as a technical liaison with facility and program personnel to facilitate project development.
  • Represent the Safety Basis Division to other organizations at LLNL and external stakeholders.

Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific or engineering discipline or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Ability to qualify as a safety analyst for the following Hazard Category 2/3 nuclear facilities: Radiography Facility, Hardened Engineering Test Facility, Tritium Facility, Plutonium Facility, and Waste Storage Facilities.
  • Fundamental problem-solving and analytical skills sufficient to define potential accident progression and control interactions.
  • Ability to prepare technical documents following appropriate formatting protocols (e.g., safety basis calculations, USQDs).
  • Verbal and written communication skills sufficient to efficiently document, present and explain technical or operational information and work results.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, collaborative work environment.

Additional qualifications at the TSS.2 level

  • Comprehensive knowledge of 10 CFR 830, Subpart B, and associated DOE implementation standards (e.g., DOE-STD-1027, DOE-STD-3009).
  • Broad experience and proficiency providing regulatory safety analysis support for nuclear facility or experimental operations.
  • Experience with and comprehensive knowledge of hazard and accident analysis, including scenario development, source term evaluation, and consequence and probability determination.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Masters' degree in a scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Experience performing analyses using various atmospheric dispersion modelling and/or fire modelling software (e.g., ALOHA, EPIcode, HOTSPOT, MACCS2, CFAST) and/or technical software (e.g. COMSOL, MCNP)
  • Specific experience with plutonium or tritium operations.

Pay Range:$107,610- $163,764 annually

$107,610 - $136,500 Annually for the TSS.1 level

$129,150 - $163,764 Annually for the TSS.2 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
