Vaco is hiring a Controller
Location: Mankato Minnesota
Compensation: $100-$120/annually

Overview:
The Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls within the organization. This role plays a critical part in supporting the financial integrity of the company by leading month-end closings, managing compliance with regulatory standards, and guiding budgeting and forecasting efforts. Within the context of the waste industry, the Controller ensures that financial processes are aligned with operational demands, including route efficiency, asset tracking, and disposal site cost analysis.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage daily accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and fixed assets.
  • Lead the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes; prepare accurate and timely financial statements.
  • Develop internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with GAAP and industryspecific regulations.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis, especially relating to route profitability, fuel usage, and equipment depreciation.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting team members; provide performance feedback and professional development.
  • Collaborate with operations to align financial reporting with field activity (e.g., landfill/recycling facility usage, hauling costs).
  • Oversee external audits, tax filings, and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations relevant to waste management.
  • Analyze financial data to identify trends, inefficiencies, and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Recommend improvements to financial systems, policies, and processes.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or MBA preferred).
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or Controller role.
  • Experience within the waste, recycling, transportation, or logistics industries strongly preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
  • Strong understanding of cost accounting and asset management in an industrial or service-based environment.
  • Familiarity with ERP systems and financial software; experience with route-based billing systems is a plus.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Effective leadership, communication, and team management capabilities.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with operations, maintenance, and executive teams.
Determining compensation for this role (and others) at Vaco/Highspring depends upon a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual's skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, office location and other geographic considerations, as well as other business and organizational needs.
