What to Expect
The Coatings Application Technician performs process sustaining tasks for the manufacturing line on a variety of mechanical and electrical processes including response to out-of-control process, work on yield improvement projects, disposition of special case non-conforming materials that come from the manufacturing line, qualifying new equipment and processes that are being introduced into the manufacturing line. Perform supporting activities for Engineering and Manufacturing including 5S and Lean manufacturing activities, yield improvement, scrap reduction, production line configuration, and safety procedures.
What You'll Do
- Support Engineering and Manufacturing in improving and writing manufacturing instructions specific to coatings application processes, including rework and touch-up procedures, and ensuring qualification schedules are always available and current
- Develop coatings application manufacturing instructions, including proper handling of coating materials, application techniques, and safety protocols
- Provide daily hands-on coverage of coatings application line processes to ensure smooth and effective operations, including rapid response to out-of-control coating processes to minimize material waste and maximize throughput
- Investigate and implement countermeasures to improve coating application consistency, process Cpk, and product yield including film thickness, adhesion, and surface finish quality
- Execute experiments and analyze data under the direction of process engineers including but not limited to DOE, GR&R, and coating process validation studies in a pilot environment
- Lead special case disposition of non-conforming coated materials or assemblies produced by the pilot line and escalate to the production engineering team as needed
- Maintain and help develop up-to-date maintenance and calibration procedures and schedules for coating application equipment, including spray systems, curing ovens, and surface prep stations
What You'll Bring
- Associate's Degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Technology, Coatings Technology, or equivalent hands-on technical experience in a coatings environment
- Hands-on experience working in a pilot or production coatings application environment, including liquid coatings, powder coating, conformal coatings, or chemical surface treatment processes
- Demonstrated ability to manually apply coatings using spray guns, dip systems, or automated coating equipment in a controlled environment
- Strong proficiency in common workplace software - Microsoft Word, Excel, Visio, Access, etc. - for documenting pilot process data and reporting results
- Ability to troubleshoot coating application equipment including spray systems, pumps, fluid delivery systems, and curing/drying equipment
- Proven ability to draw accurate conclusions from coating technical specifications- such as adhesion tests, thickness measurements, and visual inspections - and assist with corrections to the existing process
- Proven ability to handle multiple priorities with minimal direction in a fast-paced pilot environment, contributing to a positive, team-oriented work culture
