POSITION SUMMARY

The Lead Planer man will cover all aspects and responsibilities of the lead planerman position with the result being to have consistent, accurate and quality product produced with minimum downtime while ensuring efficient utilization of company time.

RESPONSIBILITIES

GENERAL



  • Understand the defects related to planing lumber and knowing what to change in the set-up to ensure quality and accuracy of all set up work.
  • Take responsibility to ensure that minimum standards for all set up activities are met including the competence to make set up adjustments using automatic set-up systems and computer controls.
  • Assist and provide input and discussion to the dry end supervisor as needed.
  • Monitor preventative maintenance program for all set up, planer and feed table equipment and communicate with planners to schedule.
  • Perform lumber size checks and adjust set-up as needed to correct.
  • Be current of all policy changes, as informed.
  • Track data for all set up activities, cutter head and knife changes
  • Set daily, weekly and monthly priorities with planners.
  • Dispatch maintenance when required and appropriate.
  • Ensure that all work for shift is complete or covered and then completed.
  • Ensure all cleanup tasks are assigned and performed daily.
  • Willingness to work overtime to meet operational needs.
  • Be present for all training if happens on a weekend day, as possible.


TRAINING



  • Training, assisting and familiarizing new hires with company work rules, policies, safety, communication systems and teamwork.
  • Train new hires in all aspects of the set-up area including machine inspection, planer plugging issues and general troubleshooting skills.
  • Train, encourage and assist the other planer men on meeting their advancement work-up steps.
  • Assist in identifying candidates for "weekend planerman helper" position to assist with maintenance needs as identified. This person(s) will be candidate planerman trainees, if proven acceptable for that position.


SCHEDULING



  • Assist planners & maintenance supervisor(s) with scheduling of weekend maintenance, PM's and parts ordering. Will need to assist with accommodating weekly production scheduling coverage, as necessary.


EQUIPMENT



  • Planer men are part of the maintenance team and will maintain and keep all planer mill equipment including but not limited to the planer, infeed, feed table and outfeed equipment are in proper working condition.
  • Be proactive with regards to potential equipment breakdown and failure by alerting appropriate maintenance personnel /or supervisors to assist.
  • Planer maintenance room and all tools & equipment shall be under direct care of lead planerman to inventory, account for, and re-order as necessary. This includes consumable supplies, such as drills, taps, extractors, etc. these shall be monitored and re-ordered to ensure always available for necessary repair work. This is a core fundamental of the lead planerman position.


SAFETY



  • Use and monitor all company safety rules and policies.
  • Report on all safety concerns, incidents, violations, etc. immediately to the appropriate supervisor
  • Oversee and be responsible for a clean and safe work area.
  • Safety first, production second & clean-up last


COMMUNICATION



  • Coordinate all maintenance scheduling through planner and maintenance supervisor(s).
  • Communicate and coordinate all set up work and activities with coworkers and other department leaders to include mill supervisors and are a liaison between employees and management.


PARTS



  • Make sure all parts checked out during shift have tags pulled and recorded with warehouse staff.
  • Coordinate parts usage with warehouse manager, planners and maintenance supervisor.
  • Pre-emptive planning will be required to be predictive of upcoming larger repair tasks and place parts orders in timely fashion to achieve uptime goals and ensure minimum downtime events.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Move safely, quickly, and perform duties with repetitious movement. Sit and/or stand for shift, reach with hands and arms, stoop, squat, twist, push and pull, maintain balance, bend at the waist, kneel, walk varying distances, and climb stairs.



  • Frequent climbing stairs
  • Frequent and repetitive use of upper extremities (i.e. shoulders, arms, wrists, hands) in gripping, turning, manipulating objects of various sizes, shapes, weights
  • Repetitious bending, kneeling or stretching
  • Repetitious pushing and pulling 20lbs at 30" working height
  • Occasional walking short distances
  • Occasional lifting 50 lbs from floor to 30" working height
  • Occasional pushing, pulling, lifting 100 lbs to 30" working height with the use of a dolly or hoist height


WORK ENVIRONMENT

Must be able to tolerate all weather elements, loud conditions, airborne particles (sawdust).

DISCLAIMER

This position is probationary, with required task functions and performance to be evaluated monthly and reviewed with the employee. At this time, goals and expectations will be reviewed with all acceptable standards noted along with any identified areas of further improvement. After 6 months, this position will be considered permanent, assuming all goals and expectations are being met.
