DESCRIPTION

The Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) performs timely and accurate blood draws for inpatients, emergency department patients, and outpatients. They are responsible for specimen processing, accessioning, phlebotomy, heel and finger sticks, customer service, clerical duties, problem resolution, record keeping, supply inventory and maintenance, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment. Additional responsibilities include effective communication with laboratory customers, operation of instruments, and preventive maintenance appropriate to the assigned section/department. Performs all duties in a manner consistent with current laboratory safety standards. Maintains a current Phlebotomy Certification issued by the State of California Laboratory Field Services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be a certified Phlebotomist and hold a valid California Phlebotomy license (CPT).

  • Minimum one (1) year phlebotomy lab experience, preferably in a large, complex healthcare system.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical and scientific terminology.

  • Knowledge of laboratory regulations, safety standards, and ethical requirements.

  • Knowledge of hospital isolation, infection control protocols, and patient comfort/safety.

  • Demonstrated competency in specimen collection, specimen preparation, storage, and disposal procedures.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, staff, and healthcare providers.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and provide excellent customer service.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • UCSD BART certification, or BLS at time of hire, with commitment to get BART within six months of hire date.

  • ED experience.

  • Accessioning experience.

  • Specimen processing experience.

  • Recent CPT experience.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and a pre-employment physical.
  • Must work variable shifts, weekend rotations, holidays, and swing shifts.
  • May be required to travel to other UCSD sites.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $58,401 - $72,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $27.97 - $34.77

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
