This position will be located in San Diego, California.
Job Overview
The Boiler Technician Lead serves as SRM Boiler Supervisor and the facility coordinator for their respective facilities and areas of operation.
Responsibilities
Essential Job Duties:
- Lead, coordinate, and oversee daily boiler operations, maintenance, repair, and inspection activities.
- Assign work to Boiler Technicians and Boiler Tenders and provide technical direction in the field.
- Operate, maintain, remove, repair, and/or install boilers and associated boiler plant equipment as needed.
- Repair and/or install control transformers, electrodes, relays, solenoids, switches, thermostats, rheostats, aquastats, circulating pumps, generating pumps, fuel pumps, DDC controls, electrical inputs, and plumbing components.
- Troubleshoot and repair boiler controls, burners, fuel systems, combustion systems, pumps, valves, gauges, piping, steam traps, strainers, check valves, relief valves, and related appurtenances.
- Derate various types of boilers and dial them into factory-recommended specifications. Reconfigure boiler installations due to poor installation of controls, plumbing, or improper draft.
- Identify and correct boiler installation problems related to electrical, plumbing, controls, combustion air, and DDC systems.
- Install or coordinate installation of ceiling exhaust fans, sheet metal, and related exterior components required for proper combustible draft.
- Perform visual, audible, and mechanical checks; check gauges, recording devices, alarms, safety devices, and controllers.
- Monitor boiler water, chemical, and fuel levels, and ensure required adjustments are made to maintain proper levels.
- Test boiler water quality or arrange for testing; ensure corrective action is taken, including chemical treatment, to prevent corrosion and harmful deposits.
- Review logs associated with daily and monthly boiler performance for accuracy and completeness.
- Ensure required operational, maintenance, safety, and inspection records are completed and submitted as required.
- Provide technical training, mentoring, and field guidance to Boiler Technicians, Boiler Tenders, and other assigned personnel.
- Ensure work is performed in accordance with applicable safety procedures, lockout/tagout requirements, environmental requirements, contract requirements, and manufacturer specifications.
- Keeps supervisor apprised of unique situations, equipment deficiencies, personnel issues, and problems encountered.
- Support outage planning, routine/urgent/emergency repairs, and after-hours response if necessary.
- Coordinate with technicians, quality control, safety personnel, and government representatives as required.
- Perform all other work-related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Mandatory:
- Must have 5 years of boiler operational, maintenance, and repair experience.
- Must have experience providing field direction, technical oversight, or lead-level support to mechanical or boiler personnel.
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
- Knowledge of boiler systems, steam systems, hydronic systems, burner controls, combustion principles, fuel systems, and both oil and gas configurations.
- Knowledge of the practical application of engineering, science, and technology; capable of applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the operation, repair, and maintenance of boilers and hydronic systems.
- Knowledge of various mathematical applications, boiler water treatment, and chemical compositions.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, as-builts, blueprints, work orders, and manufacturer specifications.
- Possess a valid Driver's License.
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Must be able to comprehend, read, speak, and write proficiently in the English language.
- Ability to deal with a variety of people in a professional and courteous manner in diversified situations.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed mostly indoors. Outdoor work is subject to temperature extremes and inclement weather conditions.
- Work hours are subject to change, with weekend work or overtime as needed.
- Subject to hazards that may cause personal bodily harm; diseases, cuts, bruises, burns, common colds, influenza, dust, odors, and elevated noise levels.
- Tasks may be performed on elevated, uneven, inclined, hard, and soft-carpeted floors, cement structures and surfaces, including building rooftops and elevated passageways.
- Must be able to work under, in or around buildings, structures, or fixtures, such as ducting systems, attics or crawl spaces.
Physical Requirements: While performing duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand and/or walk for long periods at a time, sit, use of hands and fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, climb ladders, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk or hear, or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision.
