Ensures the safety of patients, visitors, and employees by making sure that safety doors, lights, and fire extinguishers are inspected and up to code. All inspections will be in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and The Joint Commission standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. High School Diploma or Equivalent.

EXPERIENCE:

1. Two (2) years' experience in healthcare life safety.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bachelor's Degree.

EXPERIENCE:

1. Five (5) years' experience in healthcare life safety.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. They are not intended to be constructed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Inspects and records information while inspecting Fire Extinguishers.

2. Inspects and records information while inspecting Exit Lights.

3. Inspects and records information while inspecting Emergency Lights.

4. Inspects and records information while inspecting Fire/Smoke Barrier Doors.

5. Inspects and records information while inspecting Eye Wash Stations.

6. Performs monthly fire drills, one per shift per quarter. Fire Drills will include offsite facilities.

7. Participates in committee and improvement activities at WVU Medicine as directed by the WVU Medicine Safety Director.

8 Assists with inventory and maintenance of disaster supplies and equipment at WVU Medicine.

9. Performs other administrative duties to support the overall mission of the WVU Medicine health and safety programs, as assigned by the WVU Medicine Director of Safety.

3. May be required to perform duties in inclement weather.

4. The employee must occasionally lift and/ or move up to 35 pounds.

1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and /or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; explosives; risk of radiation and vibration. The Safety Technician may also be expected to wear personal protective equipment that is cumbersome, hot and uncomfortable for patient decontamination.

1. Good oral and written communications skills

2. Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, patients, visitors, medical staff, regulatory agencies and the general public.

3. Accountable for personnel and professional conduct and behavior.

4. Demonstrates the flexibility in response to unexpected changes in work volume, emergencies, staffing or scheduling changes.

5. Maintains a professional appearance in accordance with hospital policy.

6. Must possess basic compute and typing skills.

7. Must function independently and have flexibility, personnel integrity, and the ability to work effectively with personnel, support and outside agencies.
