The Systems Engineer II is responsible for designing, deploying, maintaining, and supporting critical IT infrastructure that enables research computing platforms across Mass General Brigham, and plays a key role in ensuring the operational efficiency, reliability, and scalability of infrastructure supporting High Performance Computing (HPC) systems, Trusted Research Environments (Research Enclaves), enterprise storage services, and other technical platforms that are part of the Digital Research Operations services to the MGB research community. The position focuses primarily on storage, network, and hypervisor infrastructure engineering. The engineer will work closely with infrastructure teams, researchers, and platform engineers to design, deploy, and operate infrastructure services that support advanced scientific workloads.
In addition to engineering responsibilities such as architecture reviews, infrastructure deployment, and operational improvements, this role includes a user-facing component, requiring responsiveness and effective communication with researchers and technical stakeholders.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, and maintain storage and network infrastructure supporting research computing environments, including HPC systems and Trusted Research Environments.
  • Implement and maintain enterprise storage platforms supporting high-performance research workloads.
  • Design and maintain network infrastructure supporting research computing platforms, including high-performance networking environments.
  • Support hypervisor infrastructure used for research platforms and supporting services.
  • Deploy and maintain infrastructure both on-premises and in cloud environments.
  • Participate in architecture reviews and infrastructure planning for new research platforms and services.
  • Troubleshoot infrastructure issues across compute, storage, networking, and virtualization layers.
  • Develop and maintain automation for infrastructure provisioning, configuration management, and operational workflows.
  • Monitor infrastructure systems and respond to operational incidents to ensure platform availability and reliability.
  • Provide technical consultation and infrastructure guidance for research initiatives and platform deployments.
  • Coordinate with vendors and internal infrastructure teams to troubleshoot, provide support, and escalate when necessary.
  • Support provisioning processes, including infrastructure acquisition, deployment, and lifecycle management.
  • Communicate effectively with research users and stakeholders to support infrastructure needs and resolve technical issues.

  • Technolgies and research service priorities may change over time, and other duties and responsibilities as assigned as needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 5+ years of experience supporting enterprise infrastructure environments.
  • Experience supporting Linux-based systems in production environments.
  • Experience working with distributed storage and Scale-out enterprise storage platforms such as NetApp, Dell PowerScale, VDURA, or similar technologies.
  • Experience supporting data center networking technologies such as Arista, Dell Networking, Mellanox/NVIDIA networking, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with virtualization platforms such as VMware or OpenStack.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation tools such as Ansible, Terraform, or similar technologies.
  • Experience deploying or operating infrastructure in public cloud environments. Azure is preferred.
  • Experience supporting research computing, scientific computing, or HPC environments is a plus.

Skills/Abilities/Competencies

  • Strong understanding of enterprise infrastructure including storage systems, networking, virtualization, and compute environments.
  • Ability to design, deploy, and troubleshoot infrastructure supporting large-scale or performance-sensitive workloads.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills across multiple layers of infrastructure, including networking, storage, virtualization, and operating systems.
  • Ability to automate infrastructure provisioning and operational workflows using modern infrastructure-as-code tools.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams including infrastructure engineering, security, and research computing groups.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including research users.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and respond effectively in operational or incident situations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service, responsiveness, and supporting research users in a technical environment.
  • Ability to document infrastructure architecture, operational procedures, and technical processes clearly.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and staying current with evolving infrastructure technologies.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • No direct reports; may provide guidance to less seasoned and new staff

Fiscal Responsibility

  • Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by effectively using Mass General Brigham resources

Working Conditions

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • This position requires occasional local travel to MGB sites, vendors, and/or conferences
  • Hospital work environment working conditions include possible exposure to diseases or infections and may require safety gear (PPE) such as gloves and mask.
  • Normal office working conditions. The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; talk; or hear; use hands to finger; handle; or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and stoop; kneel; or crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 5 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and depth perception.


Working Model Requirements

  • M-F Eastern Business Hours Full Time required

  • Hybrid model includes in person onsite work at MGB local sites, weekly or monthly, to be determined based on business needs

  • Must be flexible for weekly or monthly in person stakeholder meetings, team meetings and internal customer needs

  • On remote workdays, employees must use a stable, secure, and compliant workstation in a quiet environment. Teams video is required and must be accessed using MGB-provided equipment
