Job Summary

Caltech Optical Observatories (COO) is seeking a talented research assistant to join its Optical and Infrared (OIR) Instrumentation group as an occasional employee.

The OIR group designs, fabricates, and commissions advanced astronomical instrumentation for Palomar, Keck, and Thirty Meter Telescope Observatories. The qualified assistant will perform a variety of general laboratory support functions in support of the manufacture of opto-electro-mechanical instrument systems as part of a manufacturing team.

Key activities may include, but are not limited to, optical fiber testing and maintenance, as well as alignment, adhesive bonding, cleaning, baking, and polishing of optical elements. The successful candidate will be part of a team responsible for incoming material inspection and inventory management. Continuous learning and exhibition of problem-solving skills are essential. Support and training will be provided by astronomical instrument engineers and observational scientists, with whom strong communication skills are necessary.

This position is based on the Caltech University campus in Pasadena, California.

Essential Job Duties
  • Fiber optic routing, bonding, inspection, polishing, and testing
  • Optical element inspection, test, and integration into functional assemblies
  • Ultrasonic cleaning and vacuum oven baking for component outgassing
  • Working knowledge of electronics diagnostics, multimeter, and oscilloscope operation
  • Maintenance of a clean and safe workplace
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications
  • Completion or current enrollment in the following coursework: Calculus, Physics
  • Basic understanding of Mechanics, Computer Science, Physics, and Astronomy
  • Basic skills in Python, Java, and MATLAB
Preferred Qualifications
  • Intellectual curiosity and effective communication skills in a team environment
  • Light mechanical or electrical shop experience
  • Familiarity with proper use of digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, handheld metrology tooling, and/or benchtop microscopes

Hiring Range

$19.00 - $22.00 Per Hour

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
