Department Specifics: OCC Library

The mission of the Orange Coast College library is to support and complement the college mission of promoting student success by providing a wide range of basic to in-depth resource materials, library instruction, and encouragement of lifelong learning. At the same time, the library staff serves as a central and vital link for the informational and enrichment needs of all campus personnel.

The library maintains a print, media, and online collection of resources built around the college curriculum. The library maintains a collection of best sellers for the enrichment of staff, students, and community users. The libraryhas one or more copies of every textbook sold in the college bookstore available for 2 hour use in the library. Interlibrary loan is available to access hard-to-find materials. We provide photocopiers, scanners, media viewing stations, and a computer lab to allow students to perform more effectively. To help develop the library and information competency skills of our students, the librarians provide library lectures to classes, library workshops for students, and a transferable, GE option course, Library 100. The library further helps students, faculty, and staff by providing reference services. The library offers an academic environment in which to study, collaborate in group study rooms, borrow from our large collection of textbooks and other materials, access electronic resources and receive professional assistance from faculty librarians for their research and information needs.

Summary
Performs recurring paraprofessional and clerical library duties in a library involving acquisitions, receiving, basic cataloging, processing, and circulation of library materials. Provides information and assistance to library customers.

Distinguishing Career Features
The Library Clerk Senior represents the entry level in a library support career ladder. Incumbents at this level will support a Librarian or Library Media Technician and are assigned to customer and technical service activities. The Library Clerk Senior requires compliance with the stated qualifications and the ability to support acquisition and processing of library materials into circulation. Advancement to Library Media Technician is based on need and requires a demonstrated ability to deal with a more complex level of library processes such as intermediate cataloging. Advancement to Library Media Technician also requires formal education and training as stated in the job description to support higher levels of service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties may vary among departments, divisions and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following types of duties, as assigned:
1. Receives and verifies the content of orders. Processes invoices after making adjustments to denote the proper amount and type of inventory received or to be returned.
2. Assists faculty, staff, students, and other visitors with use of the library. Assists them to find materials, pointing out library resources, and introducing visitors to librarian for assistance in research.
3. Shelves new and returned materials (books, media, or periodicals) in the absence of student employees and ensures accurate data entry into the library system.
4. Circulates, stores, and inventories books, periodicals, and audiovisual materials including those that are overdue.
5. Processes a full range of library materials within established parameters.
6. Provides technical services such as interlibrary loan including those required for cooperative library system materials and maintaining the course reserve collection.
7. Maintains current procedures manuals for the position. Cross-trains other staff members.
8. Performs routine clerical and record keeping duties.
9. Provides guidance and training to student employees.
10. Monitors and reconciles library book budget and other fund accounts to ensure proper accounting procedures for all funds.
11. Creates purchase orders using Vendor and Banner software to spend funds from library general fund accounts, lottery funds (when available), Friends of the Library foundation accounts, and ancillary fund account.
12. Understands and assigns account numbers to purchase orders and fund transfers to properly assign expenses for reporting purposes.
13. Manages ordering supplies according to District rules and standards and maintains supply inventory for department.
14. Maintains current knowledge of District and college processing of purchase orders and other financial records.
15. Processes daily arriving periodicals and newspapers.
16. Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
17. Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 - Code of Professional Ethics.

1. Requires working procedural knowledge of standard library methods, practices, and terminology including use of library catalogs.
2. Requires basic knowledge of a library classification system, subject headings, and library filing rules.
3. Requires basic knowledge of library automation systems and their relation to college financial records.
4. Requires sufficient communication skills in order to serve customers and to interact with staff and faculty.
5. Requires sufficient arithmetic skills to arrange materials in numerical sequence and calculate sums needed for handling cash and recording circulation data.
6. Requires sufficient English writing skills to document instructions on library procedures.
7. Requires sufficient human relations skills to convey technical information to patrons and to provide work instructions to others.
8. Requires knowledge of Excel and general accounting practices.

Education and Experience
The position requires an Associate's degree and one year of related experience plus one year of experience in a higher education library or instructional support setting with demonstrated accounting responsibilities. A Library certificate and additional experience may substitute for some higher education. Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position.

Conditions of Employment

This is a permanent, general funded, full-time, 12-months per year classified position. The normal hours of work will be Monday through Thursday 11:30 am to 8:00 pm and Saturday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with the flexibility to occasionally work extended hours and/or weekends, if necessary, to meet the department's needs. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee. (Salary Schedule: EE-112 + 2.5% Weekend Shift-Partial Shift Differential)

Pay Philosophy:
