Summary:

The Special Hematology Laboratory is currently recruiting a Medical Laboratory Supervisor. This position performs a variety of patient testing and administrative tasks in support of the clinical activities in the UNCHCS. This supervisor will oversee and assist with bone marrow collections, as well as complex specialty testing such as Hemoglobin/Thalassemia Profile by HPLC and G6PD testing. They also work closely with clinical teams, hematopathologists, and Core Laboratory teammates. The candidate must possess a thorough understanding of laboratory operations and must be knowledgeable of accreditation standards and government regulations. He/she must apply personnel management skills to promote a professional and challenging work environment. A high degree of self-confidence, the ability to effectively plan and implement changes in a complex environment, the ability to quickly comprehend and react to difficult situations, the ability to delegate responsibility and the ability to work with supervisors, peers, employees and other hospital staff in a positive, tactful and highly interactive fashion are essential.

Schedule:

The standard schedule is Monday to Friday day shift hours, and the supervisor will be in a rotation to take afterhours and weekend "on-call" responsibility.

Responsibilities:

1. Collects and analyzes data to evaluate products, processes, procedures, and laboratory needs.
2. Coordinates various programs and implements processes with other departments. Serves as a resource for employees, healthcare providers and professionals within and outside the UNCHCS.
3. Ensures compliance with regulatory guidelines. Establishes and reviews policies and procedures.
4. Manages personnel and administers personnel policies in accordance with the Healthcare Systems personnel policies. Responsible for Human Resource functions which include recruiting/hiring, performance evaluations, training, counseling and disciplinary action.
5. May perform teaching of Clinical Laboratory Science students and Pathology residents and fellows and new employees.
6. Provides input into the budget process (capital and equipment) by analyzing capital development needs and assessing the impact of new programs.
7. Provides leadership to laboratory staff to meet organizational goals.

Education Requirements:
* Requires Bachelor's of Science degree.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
* Requires MLS/MT (ASCP), MT (NCA) or MT (AMT) certification for general lab supervision, CG (ASCP) if supervising Cytogenetics, CT (ASCP) if supervising Cytology or HTL (ASCP) if supervising Histology
Professional Experience Requirements:
* Requires four years of experience at the medical laboratory technologist, cytogenetic technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist level.
