The Libraries hold memberships in ARL, CNI, CRL, Lyrasis, NERL, VALEnj, SPARC, and the Coalition of Open Access Policy Institutions ( COAPI); use Ex Libris, Alma, Primo, and OCLC as primary bibliographic utilities; and utilize a Fedora-based institutional repository.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Library Associate II for Dana Library Newark. This position reports to the Library I Supervisor and supports the daily operations of Library Access Services during assigned hours.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Ensures that students, faculty, staff, and community users have effective access to library resources across multiple formats.
  • Receives and prepares materials for circulation, managing course reserves, and processing intra- and interlibrary loan requests.
  • Assists patrons in locating materials, interpreting policies, and navigating general library operations.
  • Maintains uptodate standard operating procedures and communicates workflow changes to student employees.
  • Trains and schedules student staff, identifying damaged materials, and coordinating preservation or bindery activities.
  • Works under the direction of the Access Services Supervisor, following established library policies and procedures.
  • Supports access services operations, including circulation, reserves, document delivery, resource sharing/interlibrary loan, collection maintenance, student employee coordination, assessment and quality control, and space, facility, and security support.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates a solid understanding of library operations and services.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, along with solid organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail are essential, as is the capacity to work collaboratively in a diverse and multicultural environment.
  • Ability to learn and routinely use the integrated library system, including both the public catalog and staff modules.
  • Ability to record and maintain data in both computerized and non-computerized formats, deliver high-quality customer service, and communicate effectively with students, faculty, and members of the public.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Internet navigation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three to four years of general academic library experience, with a strong emphasis on work in access services and/or collection management.
  • Experience specifically within an academic library's access services department.
  • Familiarity with resource-sharing programs that support interlibrary loan, consortia lending, or collaborative collection use.

Equipment Utilized

  • Bibliographic and resource sharing utilities, including Rutgers University Libraries integrated library system, the catalog for the PALCI system; OCLC, the primary national bibliographic utilities; and document delivery utilities.
  • Use of the Circulation software, discovery tools, and software to communicate with patrons.
  • General use of a PC, Microsoft Office as well as scanning (print and microform) equipment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Must be able to lift and move materials weighing up to 30 pounds and to push fully loaded book trucks as part of routine duties.
  • Work schedule may vary based on departmental needs and are subject to change during summer sessions, intersessions, exam period, and other peak times throughout the academic year.

Special Conditions
  • Sunday 1:30pm-10:00pm, Monday 3:30pm-12:00am, and Tuesday through Thursday 1:30pm-10:00pm.
