What you'll be doing...

The Customer Router Security team is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Software Engineer to join our Network Security Engineering team. We are responsible for protecting the global Verizon network backbone against distributed denial of service attacks as well as managing its public key infrastructure. In this senior role, you will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the robust, scalable, and secure software systems that protect our global infrastructure. You will act as a technical leader, guiding architectural decisions, mentoring junior engineers, and collaborating across teams to defend against evolving cyber threats.

If you are passionate about low-level networking, high-performance computing, and building bulletproof security systems, we want you on our team.

Architecture & Software Engineering

  • Design & Architect: Architect scalable, technical solutions that directly address complex business and security challenges.

  • Develop & Automate: Write robust scripts and applications in Python, and leverage Ansible to implement infrastructure automation and configuration management across platforms.

  • Manage Code Life Cycles: Manage code repositories using GitHub and version control best practices, and actively compile, modify, and integrate open-source code into our environments.

  • Full-Stack System Management: Oversee the mechanics of interdependent systems, applying cross-functional knowledge of databases, system administration, and web development to ensure high reliability.

Network Engineering & Hardware

  • Configure Global Networks: Translate theoretical concepts and documentation into functional network configurations across both lab and global production environments.

  • Manage Routing & Infrastructure: Configure and optimize network routing (primarily BGP and static routes) utilizing Juniper router syntax and NetConf APIs.

  • Troubleshoot & Optimize: Perform systematic network troubleshooting to identify nuances in current network designs, resolve complex issues, and proactively enhance existing architecture.

  • Maintain Physical Hardware: Manage, maintain, and execute lifecycle hardware refreshes for 11+ cabinets of development and production network equipment.

  • Stress-Test Innovation: Rapidly adapt to emerging technologies, conduct rigorous "test-to-failure" evaluations on new hardware/software, and present strategic recommendations to decision-makers.

Leadership & Strategic Collaboration

  • Mentor & Lead: Act as a technical guide for the team, assisting with deliverables like VLAN configurations, live hardware migrations without data loss, error investigations, and automation upskilling.

  • Drive Scalable Strategy: Design broad solutions that serve the vast majority of our global customer base, avoiding over-engineered "corner-case" fixes.

  • Align Security & Business: Actively balance core business objectives with strict security policies to ensure solutions are both functional and highly secure.

  • Manage Complex Workstreams: Prioritize and drive multiple fast-paced projects to resolution, meeting key deadlines across various stakeholders.

  • Communicate Powerfully: Build strategic cross-functional relationships and translate complex technical network and security issues into clear, understandable language for diverse audiences.

This position will be included in the on-call rotation.
