Dr. Jarrod Marto of the University of Virginia Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics and Department of Chemistry is recruiting a highly motivated postdoctoral research fellow with experience in synthetic chemistry to join his team. Studies in Dr. Marto's lab are aimed at understanding how genetic mutation or the action of small molecule probes impact the functional proteome, including protein post-translational modifications, biochemical complexes, signaling pathways, or how they manifest en masse as phenotypic or disease signatures.
The successful candidate for this position will leverage their skills in small molecule synthetic chemistry to design and implement chemical proteomic screening techniques performed across individual protein targets, mechanism-related gene families, and proteome-wide. Target-ligand pairs will be validated through genetic, biochemical, and other studies to assess selectivity as well as the potential for novel mechanism of action. The candidate will lead planning and execution of their research project, work closely with Dr. Marto to disseminate results through publication and conference presentations, and will collaborate with other lab members in related research projects. Additionally, the candidate will work closely with Dr. Marto to pursue external funding related to their research project. Minimum qualifications include a doctoral degree, preferrable a Ph.D. in synthetic chemistry with a focus on natural product mimetics or other novel chemotypes suitable for target-based or proteome-wide small molecule screening campaigns along with hands-on experience with analytical as well as biophysical characterization techniques. Experience in medicinal chemistry, target engagement or other validation assays, and high-throughput molecular profiling techniques is a plus but not required. The successful candidate for this position will be energetic, eager to learn new techniques, and excited by the opportunity to work in a supportive and collegial multidisciplinary lab environment. Additional requirements for this position include strong interpersonal and organizational skills, attention to detail, methodical record keeping, and a desire to contribute to research projects both independently and within a team. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. This is an exempt-level, benefited position. Learn more about UVA benefits. Postdoctoral employment is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a doctoral degree within the previous five years. This is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal (for an additional two, one-year increments)contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site. About UVA and the Community To learn more about UVA and in the Charlottesville area, visit UVA Life and Embark CVA.
