The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks either a full- or part-time instructional staff member with expertise in strategic communication. We seek a colleague who enjoys close collaboration with fellow instructors to help continue building one of the top strategic communications programs in the country. Known widely for our curriculum innovation and leading-edge scholars and teachers, we are seeking a colleague who will bring industry experience, fresh ideas, and a commitment to learning outcomes.

Principal duties will include:

1. Prepare and teach strategic communications courses; hold office hours; prepare, administer, and grade exams; prepare, assign, and grade coursework. Possible classes include, but are not limited to:

* JOURN 345: Principles and Practice of Strategic Communication

* JOURN 445: Creative Campaign Messages

* JOURN 447: Strategic Media Planning

* JOURN 449: Account Planning & Strategy

* JOURN 463: Digital Media Strategies

* JOURN 464: Public Relations Strategies

* JOURN 465: Social Media Marketing Communications

* JOURN 475: AI for Strategic Communication

2. Collaborate with faculty on curricular developments, including the development of new strategic communication courses and coursework.

3. Oversee and advise one of the school's strategic communication-related student organizations, such as Ad Club, Public Relations Student Society of America, Association for Women in Communications, Bucky PR, or Association for Women in Sports Media.

4. Participate in faculty governance by actively contributing on 1-2 departmental committees.

5. Contribute to external relations efforts with employers and alumni in strategic communication. Maintain contacts and assist with recruiting as needed. Advise students on professional development and employment.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
  • Presents evaluations of teaching methods and techniques to those in the institution and elsewhere
  • Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and trains faculty and other instructional staff in use of said instructional techniques and programs
  • Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
  • Designs curriculum and/or techniques for instruction in a disciplinary area and suggests new ways of effective instruction in courses within that discipline
  • Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
  • May administer budget and personnel for instructional grants and programs
  • Develops grant proposals for instructional development and may serve as principal or co-principal investigator on grants to develop new teaching methods in the discipline
  • Supervises the day-to-day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is home to one of the oldest schools of journalism and mass communication in the United States. The School, as a department within the College of Letters and Science, is part of one of the nation's finest public universities and enjoys intellectual resources, teaching and research laboratories, and various sources of research support.

Our undergraduates pick a study area of emphasis - strategic communication (e.g., advertising, public relations), journalism, or both. More than half of our students are strategic communication students; upon graduation, students successfully find employment in a variety of communication fields across a wide range of settings - agency, corporate, government, higher education, etc. Our strategic communication alums are actively involved in giving back to our program in several ways, including guest speaking in classes, mentoring, networking, and job placement.

Compensation

The expected full-time salary range for this position is $80,000 - $90,000 for highly experienced candidates. Actual pay within this range will depend on experience and qualifications and will be prorated based on FTE.This position is a 9-month appointment, with no teaching or service obligations in the summer months.

Required Qualifications:

A minimum of 5 years of work experience in strategic communication is required. Experience should include strategy development (campaign, message, media, or brand) and an intimate working knowledge of any of the following strategic campaign communication areas:

  • Advertising or marketing communication

  • Public relations, including crisis communication and corporate communication

  • Digital media, including social media marketing, content strategy, and influencer marketing

  • Media planning and buying

  • Creative development and production, including digital design

  • Consumer research and new product development

  • Health or political communication campaigns

Preferred Qualifications:

We seek a colleague with some combination of the following:

  • Ability to sift through information, analyze it, formulate insights, make strategic recommendations, develop creative messages, and target key publics based on data

  • Experience in creating presentation materials (scripts, slides, etc.) and presenting content in front of large audiences

  • Experience in project management, strategic development, and tactical execution in the context of organizational goals and initiatives

  • Experience managing relationships between clients and agency partners and building relationships within allied professional networks

  • Experience in developing and executing queries in syndicated database programs (Nielsen, Simmons, etc.) to mine for insights and inform organizational decision-making

  • Experience coaching or mentoring employees, managing teams, or prior teaching experience

  • Experience using AI in professional strategic communication is strongly preferred.

Education:

Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred.
