The University of North Carolina School of the Arts ( UNCSA) trains talented students from high school through graduate school for professional careers in the performing, visual, and film and television arts. Students are admitted by audition or interview to one of five conservatory programs: Dance, Design & Production, Drama, Filmmaking, and Music.


The Division of Student Affairs supports the physical, social, and emotional well-being of a diverse student population, ages 13 and older, through services that include residence life and housing, student wellness and counseling, orientation and student engagement, transportation, and student development programs.


The Business Officer for the Division of Student Affairs provides financial and operational leadership to support the division's broad portfolio of services and programs. This position manages the division's budget operations, financial planning, procurement, and business processes while ensuring compliance with university, UNC System, and state policies. The Business Officer works closely with division leadership to monitor multiple funding sources, oversee financial transactions, manage contracts and purchasing, and support personnel and operational budgeting across departments within Student Affairs.


This role serves as a key partner in maintaining the financial infrastructure that supports student-facing programs and services, including housing, wellness, student engagement programming, orientation, and other divisional operations. By providing strategic financial oversight and administrative coordination, the Business Officer helps ensure that the Division of Student Affairs can effectively deliver services that promote student success and well-being at UNCSA.
Primary Description of Work
Internal Only to UNCSA permanent employees.
The Business Officer for the Division of Student Affairs administers and manages the financial and business operations that support a broad portfolio of student services and programs. The position is responsible for the oversight and coordination of financial resources including state appropriations, institutional funds, auxiliary revenues, and receipt-supported accounts.


This role performs a range of financial and administrative functions including budget management, financial reporting and projections, procurement and contract processing, payroll coordination, and personnel administration. The Business Officer also oversees account reconciliation, monitors financial activity across multiple funding sources, and ensures compliance with university, UNC System, and state policies.


Working closely with Vice Provost for Student Affairs and division leadership, the Business Officer supports operational planning and resource management for departments within Student Affairs, which includes residence education, housing operations, wellness center, counseling services, orientation, high school life, student activities/engagement, and transportation services. The position plays a critical role in maintaining sound financial practices and supporting the effective delivery of programs and services that promote student success and well-being.

Description of Responsibilities and Duties
Positions in this banded class administer and manage the business and financial affairs of a department, unit, or organization. Responsibilities include facilitation and management of financial resources that may be state appropriated, contracts and grants, and/or receipt generated.

Positions in this class perform a range of financial and business related duties associated with specialized areas such as accounting, budgeting, auditing, and/or grants administration. Functions assigned to the business officer role may include financial management, personnel administration/management, payroll, purchasing, inventory control, facilities coordination/planning, information technology assessment/planning, and closely related work.

Positions may perform or have oversight of accounts reconciliation, maintenance and reporting of financial data, financial projections, cash/receipts management, personnel planning, and facilities management. Most positions in this class have responsibility for accounting/business standards and practices, policy interpretation/implementation, the organization of work, and the supervision of others.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in business administration, public administration, or related business area; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. UNC System Office approved minimum qualifications.
