Job Description

The Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory Safety Training group is seeking an experienced, energetic, and motivated candidate with a passion for providing quality training in safety and industrial hygiene topical areas.



As part of the instructor team, you will help to ensure a safe work environment for our employees and to bolster the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program's commitment to occupational safety & health. This position requires a firm understanding of work practices along with developing an understanding of requirements, researching the topical area (including collaborating with Subject Matter Experts). You will develop and deliver engaging training materials, by a variety of means, and document all aspects of the training cycle. Depending on the program taught, there may also be written and/or hands-on (practical) examinations to be developed and administered. The selected candidate requires the ability to work and excel in a team environment collaborating with instructors both locally and across the Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) to Advance Safety, Teamwork and Learning. Must be a self-starter with a "Customer First" approach.



Additional job responsibilities will include:



  • Conduct initial and continuing training on various Safety and Industrial Hygiene topics. Examples include; Confined Space, Hearing conservation, heat/cold stress, Silica, Lead, Elevated work, Lock-out tag-out, Excavation, Electrical Safety, Engineering of High-Risk work, Hazard Analysis, additional safety training topics as required
  • Validate workforce knowledge through developing and coordinating Drills.
  • Develop standard curriculum for use across the NNL program
  • Develop and deliver recurring training programs
  • Develop and conduct practical skills and qualification exams
  • Conduct field surveillances/job site observations of work related to training delivered to validate knowledge retention and incorporate lessons learned into the continuing training cycle
  • Become the subject matter expert on assigned topics
  • Conduct peer reviews of development of materials and instructional delivery providing constructive feedback
  • Be trained on the current Learning Management System, input information and file appropriate documentation as necessary
  • Schedule training sessions

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

High school diploma or equivalent and 13 years of relevant experience; or

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Education, technical, engineering; or science related field and 11 years of relevant experience; or

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Education, technical, engineering or science related field and 9 years of relevant experience; or

Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Education, technical, engineering or science related field and 7 years of relevant experience; or

Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in Education, technical, engineering or science related field and 3 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Skills

  • Prior experience in developing and delivering training for safety and/or industrial hygiene topics based on established regulatory requirements
  • Preivous supervisory experience with skilled trades
  • Formal training background (STEM Instructors, Military Instructors, etc.)
  • Prior experience as an industrial hygienist (CIH) and/or safety professional (CSP) or similar certification
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint & Excel
  • Experience with instructional design, Storyline or Articulate training presentation development software

Pay Range
$106,200.00 - $166,000.00 annually
Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation.
