General Notes

This position requires regular outdoor work in varying and sometimes adverse weather conditions, including exposure to heat, rain, noise, and environmental conditions associated with operating and repairing motorized landscaping equipment. Responsibilities include supervising work crews, maintaining lawn and grounds equipment, ordering tools and plant materials, and performing physically demanding tasks such as lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds. The position also collaborates with supervisors and departmental personnel on budgeting, planning, and implementation of landscape maintenance and improvement projects, while performing other related duties as assigned.

Purpose

Provide leadership and hands-on oversight for the care, maintenance, and enhancement of landscaped grounds and plant materials at The University of Texas at Austin. This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising grounds maintenance operations, including mowing, edging, planting, irrigation repair, fertilization, pruning, and overall landscape upkeep. The role ensures campus grounds are maintained in a safe, attractive, and functional condition while effectively managing staff assignments, equipment, materials, and available resources to support long-range landscaping goals and departmental objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Assures University landscape is maintained to established standards, including turf, shrub, irrigation systems, and hardscape.
  • Directs several landscaping crews in the performance of landscaping tasks. Includes detailed recordkeeping, performance evaluations, timekeeping, and disciplinary actions.
  • Monitors UT Works workbench for Landscape Services and completes appropriate work orders. Enters daily labor records into UT Works database.
  • Purchases supplies and materials to support project installation and university landscape functions in accordance with university policies and procedures.
  • Readily accepts and follows written and oral instructions, maintains work schedule for the crew, completes routine paperwork, completes semi and annual performance evaluations, maintains employee daily sign in sheets for the crew, completes and approves weekly electronic time reports, maintains vehicle mileage logs, and verify daily labor in UT Works.
  • Supports campus events which occur on the West side of campus. These events include Commencement, football home games, and many other sporting events which may be one time events. Support for these events may include attending meetings, working overtime, coordinating labor to support the events, or other support as needed.
  • Wears appropriate personal protective equipment for the task, assures the crew members wear appropriate PPE, follows safety rules, and maintains safe working conditions.
  • Other related duties will be assigned, including working with other departments within the Campus Operations portfolio, and occasional overtime required, all to support organizational goals and objectives.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture or related field, or equivalent years of experience in a related field. Five years experience in landscape maintenance with four years of landscape supervisory experience. Experience in Microsoft Office Suite. Demonstrate ability to effectively work in a team environment; Ability to communicate effectively with university staff and contacts. Demonstrate stable work history and work ethic. Must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record. Must currently have or be able to obtain a Texas Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator's License within 6 months.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree in Horticulture or related field. More than eight years of experience in landscape maintenance. More than four years of supervisory experience. Specific training, coursework, and/or credentials in the grounds and landscape trade - for example: College courses, ISA, PGMS, TCEQ, TNLA. Experience working in a university or municipal setting. Intermediate level experience in Microsoft Office Suite and knowledge of work order management systems and software. Successful completion of a leadership development program.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$62,000 + depending on qualifications

40 hours, 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. In-person 100%.
