Supervises nurse anesthetists ensuring safe and effective patient care. Serves as a role model and expert clinician. Assists with the administration and management of personnel, fiscal, and material resources.The CRNA Supervisor is a role model, expert clinician, administrative supervisor, and mentor in clinical, professional leadership in the department, ensuring that all CRNAs are trained and competent in the skill sets required to provide safe patient care in the specialty Anesthesia and Perioperative Services. The incumbent is a working supervisor and is required to work clinically in direct patient care while performing administrative and leadership functions.

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist Supervisor manages, coordinates, and administers the practice of advanced healthcare professionals, including CRNAs. The CRNA Supervisor is a role model, expert clinician, administrative supervisor, and mentor in clinical, professional leadership in the department, ensuring that all CRNAs are trained and competent in the skill sets required to provide safe patient care in the specialty Anesthesia and Perioperative Services. The incumbent is a working supervisor and is required to work clinically in direct patient care while performing administrative and leadership functions.

The nurse anesthetist supervisor provides leadership to nurse anesthetists in anesthetic and perioperative services and supports the nurse anesthetist manager. The primary managerial responsibility of the supervisor is to provide professional support to nurse anesthetist at all UCSF Campuses where CRNAs are providing anesthetic care. The primary clinical responsibility of the CRNA Supervisor is the direct application of clinical expertise to patients and families treated by the department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Services. This position requires the flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

UCSF Medical Center requires all Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) to be credentialed through its Medical Staff Services Office (MSSO) in order to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric CRNAs in the perioperative clinical settings at all UCSF Medical Center sites. Credentialing and approval of the privileges takes between 30-90 days and must be completed prior to the first working day.

5 yes May provide clinical instruction to medical students and SRNAs
5 yes Monitors compliance with state and federal regulations governing provision of care
5 yes Ensures CRNAs follow patient care protocols
5 yes Leads recruitment, interviewing and selection
5 yes Collaborate with manager on the annual performance evaluations of all CRNAs, progressive discipline, up to and including counseling, letters of warning, investigatory meetings, suspension, and dismissal.
5 yes Administers collective bargaining agreements and staff personnel policies
5 yes Assists with problem identification and resolution
5 yes Directs corrective and disciplinary action up to and including dismissal
5 yes Serves as liaison between CRNAs, nursing, ancillary staff, and administrative staff regarding policy, operational, clinical practice issues
5 yes Participates in the evaluation of new clinical equipment and / or IT clinical systems
5 yes Assists in development of new workflows
5 yes Represents department on committees as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced clinical experience as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist providing direct patient care
  • In depth knowledge of patient care clinical standards, systems, external regulations and internal policies
  • Demonstrated leadership skills to effectively supervise clinicians, manage complex workflow and multiple priorities
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration and problem solving with all levels of management and staff
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Working knowledge of human resources management practices and policies
  • Demonstrated ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document CRNA performance
  • Knowledge of business software, specialized applications and data management systems used in clinics / clinical departments

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.


Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
