Overview:

We are seeking anInstrument Hall Coordinator (IHC)who will provide technical support to enable neutron scattering experiments at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). This positionresidesin theNeutron Sciences DirectorateatOak Ridge National Laboratory(ORNL). The IHC's core responsibility is to proactively resolve equipment and technical issues-in person or via a call-down list-to minimize schedule impacts and enable productive experiments. The role also supports coordination of activities in the SNS Target Facility andfacilitatesremote-access experiments.This position requires 12-hour rotating shifts.

This position reports directly to the Instrument Hall Coordinator Supervisor and interfaces widely for example with: Users/Experimenters, Instrument Scientists, Instrument teams, Scientific Associates (SAs), engineers, instrument installation and maintenance personnel and other support technicians, target and accelerator operations personnel, site services, and ES&H personnel.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Promote safe work practices throughout the instrument hall; conduct facility walkthroughs and reinforce safe work environments.

  • Support compliance with ES&H and quality program requirements, including ISMS; report potential non-compliances.

  • Providea wide range of support to Users/Experimenters, including remote-access experiments, sample environmentassistance, and instrument operations.

  • Serve as the primary User contact during off-hours and weekends, including providing text-based schedule updates and responding to problems.

  • Coordinate concurrent activities across organizations in the instrument hallregardingpriorities, shared equipment, radiation protection, permitting, andlogistics.

  • Perform equipment lifts using facility and instrument-specific cranes, minor shop tasks, and troubleshooting.

  • Coordinate with IHC Supervisor and Facility Complex Manager for general facility maintenance (e.g., HVAC, water leaks, lighting).

  • Prepare shift reports, track instrument downtime at both facilities, and communicate unresolvable issues to the IHC Team Leader and Group Leader.

  • Serve on the emergency squad; respond to and lead others in proper response to alarms.

Basic Qualifications:

  • An AS degree in a scientific or technical field and five years of experience

  • A combination of education and experience may also be considered (HS diploma and seven years of experience or BS and three years of experience)

  • Ability to work rotating shifts and respond to emergencies

  • Experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and related software

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in technical operations and the ability to coordinate across organizational boundaries

  • Demonstrated ability to perform hands-on work on technical equipment and systems

  • Experience working in or around radiological areas and experience in handling radioactive materials

  • Radiation Worker training

  • Work planning including hazards identification and mitigation, permits, Lock-out/Tag-out, etc. |

Special Requirements:

  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will berequiredafter offer.

  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:
For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required. Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.


To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.


For foreign national candidates:
If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
