Job Summary

Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) is hiring two (2) Residential Counseling Service Faculty members to work in the Counseling Department. These positions support student success through comprehensive counseling services and instruction. This position will provide brief on-site counseling (personal, academic, crisis, and career); collaborate with the division/college faculty, staff, administration, and community members in the support and development of student achievement (retention, persistence, and completion) programs to support students; facilitate workshops (study skills, career development, interpersonal skills, etc.); and teach Counseling Personal Development (CPD/BHS) courses, First Year Experience (FYE) courses, and Counseling and Applied Psychological Science (CAPS) courses.

Essential Functions
  • Delivers in-person comprehensive counseling services through scheduled appointments and walk-in availability to address personal, academic, and career concerns. Provides crisis intervention and support, including leadership in emergency situations ranging from individual student crises to broader campus incidents; consult with faculty, staff, and administrators regarding student concerns, referrals, and appropriate interventions; communicate through in-person, phone, virtually and email interactions while maintaining accurate and timely documentation
  • Collaborates with counseling colleagues and campus teams to support a cohesive, professional department environment and student-centered approach
  • Develops and presents workshops on counseling, academic success, and personal development topics
  • Builds and maintains partnerships with community agencies and external resources to support student needs
  • Participates in campus and district committees, special projects, program initiatives, curriculum development and faculty/staff development.
  • Provides leadership in assigned programs, contributes to the department and overall college through continuous improvement of Counseling Services, including oversight of designated functions and processes
  • Engages in faculty development activities, including orientation, evaluations, and ongoing professional growth in counseling, consultation, and teaching
  • Instructs courses in the Counseling Course Bank (e.g. FYE, CAP, CPD, and BHS); prepare syllabi, lesson plans, and instructional materials aligned with course competencies; provides instructional support and hold regular office hours
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree or higher in the teaching field


1. Counseling Theories and Techniques (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)

2. Personality Theories or Human Development (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)

3. Testing Theories and Applications (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)

4. Group Counseling Theories and Techniques (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)

5. Career Counseling Theories and Resources (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs),

6. Individual Assessment (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)

7. Practicum, Supervised Practice, or Internship in Counseling.

  • Must have completed either a Practicum, Supervised Practice, or an Internship in Counseling (Applicants for Counseling positions are strongly encouraged to include course descriptions from the university's catalog for the aforementioned seven courses). A counselor may be hired if he/she has completed coursework in at least five (5) of the first six (6) above areas and has the required twenty-four (24) semester or (36) quarter hours of graduate work. If the counselor is deficient in area 1 through 6, the deficiency needs to be made up within one year of the date of hire. Area seven (7) must be completed "before" the date of hire; this cannot be one of the deficient areas.


Desired Qualifications

  1. Demonstrated experience providing counseling for career, academic, and personal development in the community college setting

  2. Experience intervening with mental health crises to assess issues and facilitate community referrals

  3. Demonstrated experience teaching career, academic, and personal development in the community college setting

  4. Experience working with first generation students, diverse populations, underprepared students, dual enrollment, and diverse learners both in-person and online.

  5. Experience with retention programs and student success initiatives (e.g. achievement, persistence, and community college degree completion).

  6. Experience serving as a lead for an academic program that is data driven

  7. Experience serving on professional committees and delivering presentations

  8. One year of full-time, relevant MCCCD experience within the previous two years.


Special Working Conditions

May be required to work evenings and weekends.

May travel off-site to deliver Counseling services.
