I. JOB OVERVIEW






Job Description Summary:
GW's Division for Student Affairs engages and supports student learning by creating and fostering communities that promote personal development. Students are offered opportunities, services, and activities that promote connectedness and belonging. The Student Affairs team is comprehensive, collaborative, and supports the mission to be academically rigorous and simultaneously student-centered.

The Assistant Director (AD), Residential Education, is responsible for advancing the vision, mission, goals, and priorities of Campus Living and Residential Education ( CLRE) at The George Washington University. This position reports to the Director of Residential Education and in collaboration with other ADs, shares in the management and supervision of full-time professional staff and indirect supervision of part-time undergraduate and graduate student staff. The AD provides guidance and oversight to a residential class-year area, supporting hall staff in the development of an area/ community environment and identity. Additionally, each AD is responsible for the direction of assigned functional area(s) within the department, often working with a full- time professional as a mentor or co-chair. Functional assignments are subject to change.

The AD position is a required live-on position. A 2-bedroom 2-bathroom unfurnished apartment is provided.

Position Summary

  • Serve as a member of the departmental leadership team and assist in the development of policies, priorities, and decision-making for the achievement of departmental goals and objectives.
  • Motivate, direct, supervise, and evaluate full-time professional live-in staff members; provide indirect supervision to student and graduate-level staff. During departmental vacancies, ADs can expect to assist in filling staffing and functional area leadership gaps.
  • Provide expertise and leadership to departmental staff around specified functional areas. Functional areas can include, but are not limited to, 'student leadership, staff recruitment and selection, assessment, and signature events.
  • Provide guidance and congruence for front-line staff around the University, Division for Student Affairs, and departmental priorities, from the integration into policies, procedures, outcomes, and projects.
  • Support staff in understanding and implementing CLRE's outcomes based on the Residential Curriculum and learning strategy, REV UP@Home.
  • Provide response and support to families, students, and guests with elevated concerns about their residential experiences. Resolve issues at the point of need, appropriately communicate and share with others, including those who support in the resolution and those impacted.
  • Participate and facilitate intentional development efforts related to the needs of a diverse student and staff population.
  • Oversee assigned functional area and residential area purchasing, reconciliation, and budgets.
  • Enforce and help develop the university's behavior policy and role model community standards.
  • Serve as part of a 24/7 rotating on-call system as Senior Administrator on Call (tier 2) to provide guidance to urgent residential needs, campus emergencies, or other incidents in the residence halls. Respond to scenes for significant residential emergencies.
  • Provide support for the Division for Student Affairs' wide projects and initiatives, including new student orientation, student success initiatives, and university events/traditions, as well as participating in and supporting special events and activities, and representing the unit/division at university-wide events.


Perform other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning other responsibilities that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 6 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 4 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Ability to interpret departmental directives and vision, and provide clear direction within functional areas is desired.
  • Willingness to disrupt traditional or convenient practices to create more equitable and student-centered experiences for all residents
  • Proven collaborative work successes of partnerships with both internal and external departments, including but not limited to Faculty, Facilities, Safety, and Student Success partners, are preferred.
  • Leadership and management successes, with the ability to motivate, inspire, support, and develop a team of committed professionals, are desired.
  • Proven ability to navigate organizational change processes, including conflict, change, and uncertainty.
  • Comprehensive commitment to customer service in all aspects of academic year and summer residential experiences.
  • Exceptional critical thinking, consensus-building, emotional intelligence, and problem-solving skills.
  • Active involvement in regional or national organizations is a plus.
  • Ability to have an outcome mindset to achieve desired goals

Hiring Range $65,252.91 - $94,508.38
