| Job Description Summary: |
The Office of Military and Veteran Services offers a network of university and community resources and services to support the holistic development and learning of military-affiliated students at GW, and strives to maximize the success of GW's military-affiliated students in terms of academic achievement, career development, and community engagement.
Reporting to the Associate Vice President and Deputy Dean of Students, the Director, Military and Veteran Services is responsible for the following:
- Serves as the Lead School Certifying Official and primary Compliance Manager for the George Washington University regarding military and veteran benefits, to include the planning and implementation of the Yellow Ribbon Program. Supports the triage and response to high-level and/or complex benefits concerns.
- Directs the programmatic efforts of the Military and Veteran Services team. This will include the development, implementation, and assessment of programs and initiatives that support military students, including: MVS Orientation, Veterans Week, Veterans Day of Service, and more
- Leads the preparation and delivery of annual assessments required from the federal government, including but not limited to Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Risk-Based Surveys, Department of Defense (DoD) Self-Assessment for Compliance, etc.
- Manages Department of Veterans Affairs payments to GW, which average over $20 million per academic year, including reconciliations, debt payments, student refunds, budget projections, and Yellow Ribbon Program matches, among other financial transactions.
- Provides direct supervision to the Program Associate, MVS Engagement; Program Associate, MVS Compliance; and indirect supervision of the Graduate Assistant, MVS; and approximately 18 VA Work Study students
- Manages GW's Military Community Center (MCC), a university townhouse that provides counseling services, customer service, community-building space, and study space for members of GW's military-affiliated students
- Lead and maintain key partnerships with the Department of Veteran Affairs, State Approving Agencies for DC and Virginia, GW Career Services, GW Student Accounts, GW Office for Student Success, etc.
- Participates in regular meetings such as VA monthly office hours and training, prospective student meetings and tours, monthly GW mentor meetings, etc.
- Supports professional development initiatives and general administrative tasks for the MVS Office.
- Advises student organizations as assigned
- Serves on various University or Division working groups, committees, task forces, or other duties as assigned
The position is based at GW's Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. |
| Minimum Qualifications: |
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 8 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 6 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. |

- Possess excellent organizational and communication skills, both oral and written, and exercise sound judgment and decision-making.
- Demonstrating sensitivity to and awareness of the needs of diverse student populations, especially those of military-connected student groups, is a plus.
- Demonstrate the ability to promote collaboration and teamwork, with stakeholders involved in the decision-making process.
- Demonstrate experience in budget management and strong supervisory skills are preferred.
