THE POSITION

The Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking a Medical Records Assistant who is eager to make a meaningful impact at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Somerset. This role gives you the opportunity to support patient care by keeping vital information organized, accurate, and ready when it is needed most. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position plays an important role in the medical records function at SCI Somerset by ensuring that all information is thorough, meets required standards, and is properly accessible. As a Medical Records Assistant, you will perform the following duties:

  • Record Management: Handle electronic, paper, and film medical records to ensure completeness and compliance
  • Information Processing: Upload, merge, extract, and update data within the Electronic Health Record system
  • Confidentiality Compliance: Follow all laws, policies, and procedures while filing, withdrawing, and issuing records
  • Record Transfers: Prepare, deliver, retrieve, and transfer records for inmates who move, parole, or discharge
  • Archiving Tasks: Organize and archive inactive records and ensure materials are sent to the State Records Center
  • Reporting Support: Update logs, prepare statistical reports, and verify coding information as needed

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $40,685.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of clerical experience maintaining or reviewing medical records, transcribing dictated or recorded medical information, or conducting medical abstracting and coding; or
  • Graduation from an accredited medical secretarial, medical records, medical transcription, medical assisting, medical coding, or health information management program; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Other Requirements:

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
