Job Summary

The H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering invites applications for a Researcher Grant Writing & Research Development to support a high impact research center focused on Industrial & Systems Engineering (ISE). This position plays a key role in expanding the centers sponsored research portfolio by identifying funding opportunities, developing competitive proposals, and supporting faculty research initiatives. The ideal candidate combines strong technical literacy in engineering with exceptional writing, analytical, and project coordination skills.

Responsibilities

Grant Writing & Proposal Development

Develop, write, and edit competitive grant proposals for federal agencies (e.g., NSF, DoD, DOE, NIH, NASA, DOT), industry partners, and foundations.
Draft proposal sections including project summaries, research plans, broader impacts, management plans, and facilities descriptions.
Coordinate multi investigator and multi institution proposals, including large scale center level submissions.
Prepare and refine supplementary documents such as bio sketches, budget justifications, data management plans, and letters of support.

Research & Technical Support

Conduct literature reviews and background research in areas relevant to ISE, such as optimization, human factors, systems modeling, advanced manufacturing, supply chain analytics, and AI enabled engineering.
Synthesize complex technical information into clear, compelling narrative content.
Assist faculty in developing research aims, methodologies, and project frameworks aligned with sponsor priorities.

Funding Opportunity Identification

Monitor federal, state, industry, and foundation funding opportunities aligned with the centers research themes.
Analyze solicitations and prepare funding briefs summarizing requirements, evaluation criteria, and strategic fit.
Support long term research planning through concept development, white papers, and strategic road mapping.

Data, Evaluation, and Reporting

Gather and analyze data to support proposal justifications, preliminary results, and broader impacts statements.
Assist with progress reports and compliance documentation for awarded projects.
Maintain a repository of center capabilities, prior awards, research outputs, and boilerplate language.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

Facilitate proposal team meetings, internal reviews, and brainstorming sessions.
Coordinate with industry partners, national laboratories, and collaborating universities.

Support communication with program officers and external stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

Research Engineer I

  • A Bachelor's degree

Research Engineer II

  • A Master's degree and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or
  • A Master's degree and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree

Senior Research Engineer

  • A Master's degree in related area, and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or
  • A Master's degree in related area, and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in related area, and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.
Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in an engineering discipline or related field.
  • Experience preparing proposals for major federal agencies (NSF, DoD, DOE, NIH, NASA, DOT).
  • Experience supporting largescale, multiinstitutional, or centerlevel proposals.
  • Familiarity with research compliance, federal submission portals, and university research administration processes.
  • Knowledge of systems modeling, optimization, human factors, advanced analytics, or related ISE research areas.
