Overview

This position is responsible for managing the Company's Accounting Policy function, including the implementation and governance of accounting policies under US GAAP and Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) as well as the related general ledger activities and financial reporting. The role provides technical accounting leadership on complex and non-routine transactions, ensures compliance with evolving regulatory requirements, and partners with finance leadership and other teams within finance to collaborate in their activity of maintaining books of accounts, as well as preparing standard reports and statements. All job duties and responsibilities must be carried out in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.


Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primarily technical accounting advisor through (i) monitoring and interpretation of activities from the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), (ii) overseeing implementation of new accounting standards, and (iii) owning the governance of the Company's accounting policies.

  • Manage general accounting functions.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports and statistics.
  • Oversee and schedule activities of financial close.
  • Analyze and reconcile assigned general ledger accounts.
  • Prepare various schedules for outside auditors.
  • Assist in the development of reports to be used in analysis and presentation of financial data to senior management.
  • Assist in reviews of financial statements.
  • Coordinate accounting schedules and activities.
  • Manage and train accounting staff.
  • Ensure company compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP), and government regulations. Assist as needed on SOX 404 documentation and controls

Qualifications

Knowledge and Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, SSAPs, and general ledger accounting software packages.
  • Strong knowledge of account reconciliation, general ledger maintenance, and financial statements preparation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • MS office applications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting preferred
  • Five to Eight years of accounting experience
  • Prior supervisory or management experience
  • CPA preferred

The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.
