Short Description

The Neuro-Optometrist provides specialized evaluation, diagnosis, and management of visual disorders related to neurological conditions. This role supports the Neuroscience Institute by improving functional vision outcomes for patients with stroke, traumatic brain injury, neurodegenerative disease, and other neurologic conditions through interdisciplinary collaboration and evidence-based care.

Responsibility includes:

  • Conduct comprehensive neuro-optometric evaluations, including assessment of visual acuity, ocular motility, binocular vision, visual fields, and visual processing deficits.
  • Diagnose and manage vision disorders associated with neurological conditions (e.g., diplopia, convergence insufficiency, visual field deficits, visual neglect, oculomotor dysfunction).
  • Develop and implement individualized vision rehabilitation treatment plans, including prism therapy, vision therapy, and compensatory strategies.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including Neurology, Neurosurgery, Stroke, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Occupational Therapy, and Neuropsychology to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Provide consultation for inpatient and outpatient populations, including acute stroke, TBI, and neurodegenerative disease patients.
  • Educate patients, families, and caregivers on visual deficits, safety considerations, and functional adaptations to improve quality of life.
  • Participate in program development to expand neuro-visual services across the health system and joint venture sites.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives, including development of outcome measures, clinical pathways, and adherence to evidence-based practices.
  • Document patient care in the electronic health record (EPIC) in accordance with regulatory and organizational standards.
  • Participate in research, education, and community outreach initiatives related to neuro-visual disorders and rehabilitation.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Master's Degree preferred
  • Doctorate Degree required

Experience Required

  • 3 - 5 years required
  • 6 - 10 years preferred
  • Experience in neuro-optometric rehabilitation, brain injury, or stroke care preferred

License/ Certification Requirements

  • Licensed Optometrist (OD) - State of NJ required
  • Board Certification (e.g., Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association - FNORA) preferred
  • CPR/BLS Certification required

Special Requirements

  • Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills in neuro-visual disorders required
  • Ability to work in interdisciplinary healthcare teams required
  • Experience with vision therapy and rehabilitation techniques preferred
  • Excellent communication and patient education skills required
Hourly Rate Min $1
Hourly Rate Max $2
