The University of Iowa The University of Iowa School of Art, Art History, & Design (SAAHD) seeks applications for a 50% Visiting Assistant Professor in the Sculpture & Intermedia Area for the 2026-27 academic year. The position receives full benefits and has the option of renewal for up to three years with Department and Collegiate approval. The successful candidate will teach two sculpture courses per semester in the SAAHD Studio Art Division. There will be opportunities to include electronics in the upper-level coursework, but it will not be required. Candidates should describe their experience with relevant equipment, software, and techniques, including the number of years of experience with each, in their CV or cover letter. Research is not a requirement of this position, but a studio space in the Visual Arts Building will be provided for the successful candidate upon hiring. | Education Requirement: |
- MFA in Sculpture, Intermedia, or related field in hand by start date
|
| Required Qualifications: |
- University teaching experience in sculpture and/or intermedia or a related field
- Experience with fabrication using both traditional and CNC based tools in the creation of art objects from metal (both hot and cold fabrication), wood, plaster, and additional media
- Ability to guide ideation, formal decision-making, and conceptual rigor at the BFA and MFA levels
- Ability to guide introductory students in writing statements about their artistic projects, including the reasoning behind their formal and conceptual decisions

| Desirable Qualifications: |
- University teaching experience beyond graduate school
- Familiarity with 2D and 3D modeling software and working knowledge of 3D printing
- Ability to guide students in integrating moving and/or motorized elements into multimedia art objects, spaces, and time-based works utilizing Arduino microcontrollers, motors, lights, switches, actuators, and related devices
- Working knowledge of modern and contemporary sculpture and intermedia art, including kinetic and interactive sculpture and installation
- Ability to guide advanced students in writing statements about their artistic projects, including reasoning behind their formal and conceptual decisions
