Position Summary
This staff research position in the laboratory of Dr. Lei Zhang supports geroscience-guided drug discovery and therapeutic testing for aging, cellular senescence, cancer, neurodegeneration, and related disease models. Under the supervision of Dr. Zhang, the employee will perform hands-on experimental work in mammalian cell culture, senescence induction and validation, senotherapeutic drug-response assays, molecular and cellular biology assays, mouse tissue collection and processing under approved protocols, and organoid-related assays when needed. The position will also support protocol documentation, data analysis, laboratory record keeping, sample organization, and development of local/cloud research data infrastructure. The role is intended to provide research support, technical continuity, and project coordination for NIH relevant and grant-development projects, including senotherapeutic drug discovery, therapy induced senescence, neurodegeneration/autophagy, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, brain tumor/glioblastoma, and other related assigned projects.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Working knowledge of mammalian cell culture and standard molecular/cellular biology techniques.
  • Ability to perform or learn senescence and drug-response assays, qPCR, Western blotting, immunofluorescence, tissue processing, and mouse-related procedures under approved protocols.
  • Ability to maintain accurate laboratory records, follow SOPs, organize samples and data, and support reproducible research documentation.
  • Basic data-analysis and figure-preparation skills using tools such as GraphPad Prism, Excel, Python/R, or similar software.
  • Strong communication, organization, reliability, and willingness to work collaboratively in a growing research laboratory.

Experimental Research

  • Conduct assigned experiments supporting senotherapeutic drug discovery and testing in cell, mouse, and organoid-related models as needed.
  • Perform mammalian cell culture, senescence induction/validation, drug-response assays, viability/cell-state assays, qPCR, Western blotting, immunofluorescence, and related molecular/cellular biology methods.
  • Assist with approved mouse studies, including drug treatment support, tissue collection/processing, sample labeling, and downstream molecular assays.
  • Follow established protocols, troubleshoot routine experimental issues, and discuss results and next steps with the Principal Investigator (PI).

Data, Records, and Research Data Infrastructure

  • Analyze experimental data using appropriate statistical or computational tools and prepare figures, summaries, and presentations for lab meetings, manuscripts, and grant applications.
  • Maintain well-organized electronic and/or paper lab records, SOPs, sample inventories, and experiment documentation.
  • Help organize the lab's local/cloud research data library, including file naming, folder structure, metadata, backup practices, and data-reproducibility standards.
  • Ensure data integrity, reproducibility, and compliance with institutional expectations for research documentation.

  • Support reagent and consumable ordering, inventory tracking, sample organization, and routine lab organization.
  • Maintain assigned equipment and coordinate routine service or troubleshooting with the PI and lab staff.
  • Follow and help maintain UGA EHS, biosafety, IACUC, and lab-specific SOPs for safe and compliant research.

  • Participate in lab meetings and project discussions with lab members and collaborators.
  • Assist with onboarding and training undergraduate or graduate trainees in routine laboratory procedures, safety practices, and data-recording standards as assigned.
  • Help standardize workflows and improve reproducibility across cell culture, mouse, organoid-related, and data-management activities.
