This position assists in the maintenance and repair of all City vehicles and equipment.

Salary: $22.3453 - $26.8401 hourly (DOQ)

Essential Job Functions:
The job functions listed herein are neither exclusive nor exhaustive but are intended to be illustrative of the types of tasks the employee will most likely be expected to perform on a regular basis. The employee may be asked to perform different or additional tasks than the ones listed here, as the needs of the employer and/or requirements of the position change.

  1. Assists in the diagnosis of malfunctions and in making repairs/adjustments to all automotive equipment to keep in good operating condition.
  2. Assists in preventative maintenance and repairs to all major systems on trucks, equipment and automobiles owned by the City.
  3. Keeps records of repairs and maintenance work.
  4. Assists in snow removal and salting, lawn mowing and other seasonal jobs.
  5. Assists in street sweeping and removal of dead animals.
  6. Assists with putting up barricades and temporary signage.
  7. Assists with flood control.
  8. Performs related duties as assigned.


Graduation from high school and at least 1 year of specialized training in automobile and equipment mechanics, plus at least 1-3 years of automotive mechanic experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability and skills:

Knowledge of:

  • Techniques and practices, tools, equipment and materials used in automotive mechanics
  • Preventative maintenance techniques and practices
  • Identify occupational hazards to avoid or minimize risks
Ability to:
  • Understand and follow instructions
  • Diagnose operating malfunctions and make all necessary repairs
  • Operate light to heavy equipment
  • Use all tools and equipment necessary to accomplish maintenance and repair
  • Perform light to heavy physical task under varying weather conditions
  • Keep records and create reports
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and co-workers
Skill in:
  • The operation of a variety of tools and equipment used in the performance of the essential job functions
  • Oral and written communications
Necessary Special Requirements:
CDL with A, B, C and N (tanker) endorsements; valid Wisconsin driver license, ability to complete a pre-employment post offer physical and drug screen upon hire - including random drug and alcohol tests thereafter; must provide your own hand tools.

  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors; hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate tools, machinery and other pieces of equipment.

  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear; use hands/fingers to handle, feel and operate objects, tools, or controls.
  • Frequently required to bend, climb, balance, stopp, kneel, crouch, crawl.
  • May be exposed to adverse weather or unpleasant conditions such as heat, cold, wetness and humidity; dim or bright lights, dust, odors, noise, vibrations, toxic agents, asbestos, lead paint, electrical currents, heavy machinery; and occasionally violence, smoke and disease.
  • Frequently lift/move in excess of 50 pounds.
