Job Description

Job Title: Chemical Operator (Zinc Operator)

Location: Leeds, SC

Shift: 12h shifts

Reports to: Plant Manager

Compensation: $30.00/hr - $32.00/hr

Scope of the Position

The operator is responsible for procuring the zinc to be used in the make tank zinc batches, for adding the SO2, zinc and water additions to the reactor in the correct amounts and at the established rates, for maintaining the correct temperature in the reactor during the entire reaction, and insuring a nitrogen pad is maintained on the reactor at specified times. The Zinc Hydro Operators are also responsible for operation of the filter press and zinc oxide dryer and at this stage of the manufacturing process separates the sodium hydrosulfite solution from the ZnO by use of the filter press.

Key Responsibilities

    The general responsibilities of the Zinc Operators are centered on running all functions of the Zinc Plant during their shift and in addition, all Zinc Operators are also responsible for:
  • Both the sodium hydrosulfite solution and the ZnO Press.
  • Filtering the solution through a series of filters to remove impurities from the product and washing the filters. After filtration, the sodium hydrosulfite solution is pumped to the formulation tank where it is ready for formulation. At this point, the operators add all chemical additives to the solution as specified and the product is cooled.
  • It is the responsibility of the operators to assure that all solution leaving the formulation tank meet all product specifications.
  • Obtain necessary samples for control purposes.
  • Responsible for the dryer controls and the product quality of the dried ZnO.
  • Maintains the moisture specs by running moisture tests on the ZnO once per shift.
  • Loading of the dried zinc oxide material.
  • Cleaning the oxide cake from the filter press and cleaning the filter cloths.
  • Making sure the press is maintained against leakage of product and for removing damaged cloths and replacing with new ones.

Working Environment

  • Chemical manufacturing plant producing Liquid Alum, ACH and PAC chemicals
  • Physical capability of performing tasks in 100 degree ambient temperatures while wearing Protective Personal Protection.
  • This job requires climbing stairs and ladders and also lifting (within OSHA guidelines).
  • This job consists of outside elements where radiant heat or cold is normal work environment, and rotating shifts.
  • Following all plant safety guidelines such as: Confined Space, Working with heights Management of Change, Hot Work and Operating Procedures
  • Must be able to work scheduled 8-hour days with intermittent 14 - 16 hour days for emergency operations/repairs.

What You Need To Be Successful

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 1-3 years of experience working in chemical manufacturing or manufacturing/production.
  • Experience working with forklifts preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate experience using Microsoft programs, maintenance management systems and email.
  • Knowledge of Zinc plant operations, cooling tower chemical operations, ISO9001 requirements and RC13001 basic requirements (Asset)
  • Willingness to comply with safety and quality regulations, including wearing protective gear when necessary.
  • Ability to lift 75lbs
