Job Summary

Under the direction of the Operating Room Materials Management Supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for procurement for supplies, implants, non-capital equipment and instruments used in the operating rooms within Perioperative Services. This cost center has an annual supply expense budget of over $52 million, in support of over 30,000 surgical cases in multiple surgical services. As a Materials Specialist, the incumbent has authority to place requisitions for the department, totaling over 10,000 annual transactions annually. The incumbent integrates knowledge of often technologically complex medical supplies, implants, non-capital equipment, and vendor contracting, to ensure a reliable flow of medical supplies available when needed, following University policies and procedures on procurement, inventory and financial controls. The incumbent resolves pricing and contract issues with Purchasing, and invoicing issues with Accounts Payable. The incumbent assists in maintaining inventory tracking systems and supply waste reporting to ensure accurate inventories and supply waste reduction. The incumbent recommends supply cost reduction opportunities and operational efficiencies, assisting in implementing improvement initiatives. The incumbent works with independence and minimal supervision to achieve these goals.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in related are and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Experience in materials management in the Operating Room or other Hospital clinical department setting is required
  • Ability to maintain efficiency and accuracy under stressful situations which may include heavy workload, conflicting priorities, frequent interruptions and stringent deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently, with time management skills to determine workload priorities for timely completion of work.
  • Ability to take initiative to identify improvement opportunities and strong problem solving skills to achieve resolution.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills (oral & written) to confer with staff, clinicians and management at all levels, with various needs, to provide information, clarify issues, resolve problems and ensure cooperation.
  • Ability and experience in supporting process improvement projects.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn information systems applications, including, but not limited to: ERP/MMIS and Epic EHR/ Optime, Lawson and Trackcore applications.
  • Computer skills and strong experience in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), calendaring/E-mail applications.
  • Must see well enough to read charts & instructions.
  • Must have the ability and fine motor dexterity to operate equipment, computers, keyboard, and mouse.
  • Proficient in using standard business software including email, common word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Must be able to work with adaptability, flexibility & maintain composure during stressful and/or adverse conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Science, or other health-related fields is desirable

Perioperative Services at UC Davis Health encompasses multiple Operating Rooms, Preoperative and Post-Anesthesia Units, and Sterile Processing Departments, across the UC Davis Health Campus. Surgical care is provided across the entire life spectrum, includes a wide range of inpatient and ambulatory surgical specialties, including but not limited to: ACS Level 1 Trauma, Bariatric, Burn, Cardiac, Colorectal, Endocrine, ENT, Gynecology, comprehensive Neurosurgery, Oncologic, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Trauma, comprehensive Orthopedic (Spine, Foot & Ankle, Hand & Hand Trauma), Otolaryngology, Pain, Plastics, Robotics, Thoracic, Transplant, Vascular, Urology, and Uro-Gyn. Additionally, our Children's Surgery Center provides comprehensive surgical care in the full-range of surgical specialties in an age-appropriate setting.
