Hourly Rate: $15.00

Student employees are hired on an as-needed basis, and the number of available positions may change throughout the academic year. This is a pooled position, meaning there is not a single, immediate opening. Instead, applications are collected and reviewed over time, and qualified applicants may be contacted for an interview as positions become available.

Student employment positions are part-time,19 hour-or-less per week, temporary/seasonal appointments. Some positions may require federal work study. The work schedule is dependent upon departmental needs and employee's availability. Typical work hours are between 8 AM - 5 PM, Monday-Friday. Parkland Peers mentors will work with
their assigned mentees in establishing a deeper sense of belonging to promote
student engagement and retention at Parkland College. Through the modeling of
Parkland Peers mentors, mentees will feel empowered to seek timely and
appropriate support from established on-campus resources, and advocate for
their own educational needs. In addition to assisting the development of the
mentees, this program aims to help the mentors themselves develop
professionally and personally through trainings, weekly supervision, and the
development of specific interpersonal skills through the experience of
practicing as a support professional.

The Mentor
is a part-time, student worker position, with approximately 10-15 hours per
week. The Mentor appointment is on a schedule established by the Parkland Peers
supervision team. The mentor is responsible for working with around 10 mentees.
The expectation is that approximately 50% of time will be spent in direct
student contact, which can include promoting the program to the larger campus
community. Mentors will be assigned mentees through Mentor Collective, which is
the company that currently serves as the Parkland Peers administrative hub.

The
position involves regular meetings with their mentees and providing support and
suggesting resources related to academics, work-life-school balance, career,
personal growth, and mental health. They are not peer counselors and are not
expected to provide for all of the mentee's mental health needs. All mental
health concerns should be reported to the Parkland Peers supervision team.

The mentor's
expected working hours will be conducted between Monday-Friday 8am-5pm. Mentors
are able to meet with mentees and do administrative work on Saturdays or after
5pm Monday-Friday, but it is preferred that working hours are conducted between
the hours of 8am-5pm Monday-Friday. When Parkland College is closed (holidays,
weather days, etc.), you are not permitted to work.


Essential
Job Functions:

  • Complete all training and onboarding which may include but is not limited to, Bandana Project training, student orientation, and Mentor Collective training as well as any training identified by the Parkland Peers supervision team.
  • Attend regular weekly in-person supervision meetings
  • Additional supervisor meetings (individual or group) might be required for mentors depending on caseloads and needs.
  • Regularly meet with their mentees in agreed upon methods and frequency which may include emails, texts, in-person meetings, or video chats.
  • Provide advice and guidance to students who are designated as their mentee on a wide range of issues throughout the year such as academics, work-school-life balance, career, personal growth, and mental health.
  • Actively aid and support students during the transition into college life.
  • Provide encouragement and inspiration to mentees.
  • Identify when a student may be experiencing difficulties, which may include basic needs, mental health crises, and academic issues, and develop a plan of support with the Parkland Peers supervision team.
  • Have a good knowledge and understanding of Parkland College's departments and resources to refer supports as appropriate.
  • Encourage use of college resources.
  • Understand confidentiality and do not discuss mentee information outside of the support meetings with the Parkland Peers supervision team and Mentor Collective.
  • Assist mentees to develop goals toward their education and wellness.
  • Accurately record contacts with mentees on mentor-mentee contact log.
  • Accurately record conversations with mentees in Mentor Collective Dashboard
  • Accurately record time spent on Work Hour Verification Log and time sheet by the deadline.
  • Communicate with employees coordinating mentor program with any concerns and needs for their own support.
  • Participate in tabling and promotional events
  • Check-in weekly on the Parkland Peers Cobra page for updates and announcements
  • Other duties as assigned.

Weekly Schedule (15 hours/week)

  • 8
    hours: Direct engagement with mentees (meetings, check-ins,
    support sessions)
  • 2
    hours: Documentation (mentor log, Work Hour Verification Log, and
    Mentor Collective conversation dashboard)
  • 3
    hours: Prep and follow-up (planning, outreach, scheduling)
  • 2
    hours: Supervision Team coordination and training

Minimum
Requirements:

  • Completion of at least 30 hours of college credits
  • A 2.0 GPA or above
  • Good academic standing
