Job Summary:

MedStar Health is looking for a Peer Recovery Coach II to join our team!We are looking for a certified Peer Recovery Specialist with excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to relate to patients and health professionals, and to develop professional working relationships with partner agencies.

ThePeer Recovery Coach IIwill providenon-clinical services intended to aid patients inestablishingrecovery fromhigh riskof dependent alcohol and drug use problems. Works with a team at a MedStar Health Facility that provides peer support and motivation to encourage patients who are seeking treatment for alcohol or drug dependency and addiction issues.Assistsin completing referrals to treatment services and developing service plans to promote successful linkage to treatment services. Services will be provided in the MedStar Health Facility withappropriate follow-up.

Primary Duties:

  • Acts as peer support throughout the hospitalization and post-discharge, asappropriate toattaingoals.Acts as a resource to other clinical team members on recovery support.Assistpatientsandfamilywith understanding how toutilizethese community services.Assistspatients in linking to community support services and substance treatment services including securingappointmentsand transportation.

  • Completes required documentation and other reports.Conducts brief interventions to patients that screen positive for alcohol and/or drug use.Consults with nursing staff, social work asrequested, even ifpatient doesnot screen positive.

  • Identifiespatient'shistory of drug/alcohol use, treatment history, motivation to change behavior and other needs for community support services.Identifiespatient'sreadiness to change and use motivational interviewing techniques and other communication skills to support a plan for reducing oreliminatingharmful drug and/or alcohol use.

  • Models coping techniques and self-help strategies.Notifiespatient'snurse before visiting the patient.Participates intrainingto continually gain new skills.

  • Staff'scommunity events and activities as needed.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Peer Recovery Specialist Certification by the State of Maryland or the District of Columbia.

  • Related experience as a peer recovery coach.

  • Must be actively engaged in his/her own recovery program with a minimum of three yearsdemonstratedpersonal recovery and sustained abstinence from alcohol and/or drug use with no relapses.

  • Residency within the target populationpreferred.
