What You'll Do

First level manager providing leadership, technical direction and oversight to Packaging and Transportation (PTE) engineers, technical support personnel, and potentially subcontract employees. Responsible for maintaining safe working conditions and safety awareness, establishing goals, expectations, and priorities and integrating work within the supervised organization. Monitors department workload to ensure staff is cognizant of cost, schedule, and technical commitments. Advises management of staffing needs necessary to address both forecast and emerging workload. Develops, reviews, and/or approves budgets, proposals, cost estimates, schedules, and related documents required to meet customer needs. Frequent contact with external and internal customers is required. Ensures successful completion of all PTE and supporting documentation deliverables necessary to support CNS Y-12 and DOE Enterprise mission, including oversight in the development of designs, analysis and Safety Analysis Reports for Packaging (SARP.)



Develops designs, analysis, SARPs and supporting documentation to meet deliverables. Develops and supports a team to function as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) on packaging, transportation, and storage of hazardous and radioactive materials. This includes design, fabrication, testing and certification of Type B nuclear material packaging. Responsible for approval and implementation of new containers on site.


Provides operating areas with specific packaging professional interpretations and advice. Interfaces with DOE/NNSA/NPO Site Representative for Packaging Oversight, DOE/NNSA/Service Center (SC) Packaging and Transportation (OPT.) Provides interagency support and conducts management assessments of the packaging program.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an EAC/ABET accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET. Requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major, 2 years job-related, and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).DOE 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. (Ref. DOE O 426.2A)

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required, candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, pursuant to 10CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
