Employment Duration: 3 months (w/ potential for extension)

Under the direct supervision of the Orthopaedic Institute Practice Supervisor and Manager, guided by the policies and procedures of Ambulatory Services, and in collaboration with clinical staff and physician leadership, the Hospital Assistant 2 assists in the delivery of care to patients in an ambulatory multi-specialty group practice. Responsibilities include a variety of patient care and nursing support activities, laboratory procedures, and clinical support functions to help ensure positive patient care outcomes. The incumbent is expected to adhere to Medical Center Telephone and House Standards and provide exemplary customer service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine clinical functions, including obtaining vital signs, height, and weight.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and procedures, including rooming patients and preparing examination rooms.
  • Perform medication reconciliation in preparation for provider visits.
  • Apply and remove casts.
  • Transport patients as directed.
  • Monitor patient flow throughout the clinic, including maintaining patient tracking systems.
  • Obtain specimens and perform simple laboratory procedures as directed.
  • Perform assigned clinical activities accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Ensure imaging studies are available for patient visits.
  • Assist with instruction in the use of crutches, canes, and walkers.
  • Document patient care activities, results, and patient-related communications in the medical record.
  • Monitor medication supplies for expiration and discard expired items.
  • Follow Medical Center and Ambulatory Services policies related to infection control, safety, administrative, and clinical practice.
  • Complete annual competency requirements.

Communication

  • Demonstrate courtesy, professionalism, and follow-through in telephone communications while maintaining Medical Center Telephone Standards.
  • Promote a professional and supportive work environment by upholding Medical Center House Standards.
  • Share pertinent information and observations with members of the health care team.
  • Identify and communicate concerns to nursing staff or the appropriate supervisor.
  • Offer suggestions to improve clinic and practice operations.
  • Work collaboratively as an effective team member.

Operations

  • Maintain clean, organized, and well-stocked examination rooms.
  • Order and maintain clinical supplies.
  • Follow infection control procedures and equipment cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilization policies.
  • Complete required refrigerator logs.
  • Ensure medication cabinets, needles, and syringes remain secure.
  • Complete daily AED checks where applicable.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Follow all department and Medical Center policies, procedures, and work rules.
  • Maintain patient and staff confidentiality.
  • Demonstrate effective teamwork and communication with patients, families, and members of the health care team.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and functional work environment.
  • Set appropriate work priorities and follow established communication channels.
  • Assist with orientation and training of new staff.
  • Cross-train to support front desk registration and call center functions.
  • Float to various Orthopaedic specialty areas as designated.
  • Prepare disability forms.
  • Assist with retrieving phone messages.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

  • Relevant Medical Assistant experience
  • Active BLS certification
  • Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology appropriate to the responsibilities of the position.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Prior experience in a medical office environment.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
