Summary of Position:

Under the direct supervision of the Head Coach, assist head coach in all aspects of developing and maintaining a competitive intercollegiate rowing program within the NCAA and Big Ten Conference. Coaching responsibilities as assigned to support team goals. Assume duties for maintenance and repair of rowing equipment to the level of competitive Division I Rowing standards.

Under supervision of Facilities Director, manage the boathouse facility and oversee student workers. Maintain effective relationships with varsity and rec sport rowing coaches, the Department of Athletic support staff and the general public who frequent the boathouse area.

This position is solely responsible for the maintenance and security of facilities and equipment used by the rowing program, which includes transporting large trailers with rowing equipment to 10 - 15 away competitions each year at various locations/major cities across the U.S.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

35%: Assist Head Coach in all aspects of coaching

  • Contribute to creating a high performing, positive and inclusive training environment for the student-athletes through strong teaching skills and clear communication.
  • Maintains standards of performance consistent with departmental academics and athletics expectations as reflected in the mission statement, goals, objectives, departmental guidelines, and performance appraisal procedures.
  • Commit to adhering to all rules and regulations of the Department, the University, the Big Ten Conference, and the NCAA.

30%: Fleet Oversight

  • Maintain and repair rowing equipment including, but not limited to, shells, oars, ergometers, stationary bikes, rowing tank, coaching launches
  • Manage renewal-replacement project (i.e. turnover plan to buy and sell rowing equipment)

20% - Boathouse Manager

  • Schedule facility maintenance and coordinate improvements (i.e. work with department mechanics, plumbers, electricians, etc. when needed for building repair)
  • Oversee dock maintenance and usage
  • Supervise 4 - 6 student workers for cleaning and staffing functions
  • Develop, execute and monitor boathouse operating budget (i.e. to track expenditures, update capital budget project list)

10%: Perform administrative responsibilities, including assisting in race day management, planning and executing trailer travel

  • Establish and maintain effective relationships within the athletics department, the University, community.

5%: Compliance & Academics

  • Coordinates and implements with the head coach eligibility requirements to ensure full compliance with governing rules and regulations, proper administration of financial aid for both prospective and enrolled student-athletes, facilitates scheduling, and competition administration and game operation as necessary.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least four years
  • This position requires frequent travel, some work in the evenings and on weekends/holidays as competitions require
  • A valid U.S. driving license and the ability to meet and maintain University of Minnesota and transport large trailers of equipment safely and efficiently
  • Ability to move equipment weighing up to 100 pounds and ability to navigate on uneven surfaces to safely move between all water vessels and docks
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to a highly flexible work schedule that includes daily team practices and travel to 10-15 away competitions annually

Pay Range: $48,000 - $52,000 per year; depending on education/qualifications/experience
