  • Job Description / Summary of Duties:

    • Manufacture complex, non-routine, typically one-of-a-kind parts and equipment from raw stock of varied metals, alloys, and other materials using government-provided conventional and CNC machine tools and precision handwork
    • Determine optimal tooling material, tool types, coolants, feeds, and speeds for rare metals and new alloys; account for heat-treating, annealing, plating, and welding effects; recommend more efficient or economical machining processes; resolve machining problems independently
    • Perform shop-floor CNC programming: manufacture first article to proof dimensions, verify programming/tooling/fixturing, edit programs, and coordinate design changes with the requesting customer

    • Apply algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric computations for lead/pitch, differential and compound indexing, compound angles, and root diameters
    • Use precision measuring instruments (vernier calipers, height gauges, micrometers, gauge blocks, dial indicators, optical/mechanical comparators, go/no-go gauges) to hold tolerances
    • Provide backup capability in the Welder and Sheet Metal Fabricator areas; plan and lay out work from blueprints, sketches, and work orders; maintain safety, HAZMAT, and housekeeping standards

    • Thorough knowledge of advanced shop mathematics including plane geometry and trigonometric functions
    • Knowledge of aluminum, brass, bronze, high-carbon and alloy steels, chrome, nickel, titanium, nylon, rubber, plastics, and Teflon, and of heat-treat/annealing/plating/welding effects on machining
    • Skill in improvising tooling, fixtures, and setups for unusual surface configurations and untried tasks; skill with precision measuring instruments
    • NACI; DoD CAC; valid state driver's license; U.S. person only
