Assistant Professor in Latin American Medical Humanities

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Dartmouth invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor in Latin American Medical Humanities. The position is open to specializations in any historical period and in any Spanish-speaking region of Latin America and/or the Caribbean, including hemispheric, transatlantic, and transpacific comparative approaches. Applicants for this position should demonstrate how their scholarship and teaching engage with the intersections of language, literature, culture, and history with health, wellness, and the body as they are defined by scientific and medical discourses.

A strong theoretical foundation and full professional fluency in Spanish are required. In addition to teaching courses in their area of expertise, all faculty members are expected to teach all levels of literature, culture, and language and participate in the department's extensive study abroad programs.

Our faculty regularly collaborate with other departments and programs, such as the Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Studies Department, the African and African American Studies Department, the Comparative Literature Program, and the Women's, Gender, and Sexualities Studies Program. We also collaborate with colleagues through programming and initiatives at the Leslie Center for the Humanities and the Dartmouth Center for Social Impact. Faculty in Spanish and Portuguese are engaged in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students as well as postdoctoral fellows through the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program, the Comparative Literature MA Program, and the Provost's Fellowship Program.

• PhD, or ABD with PhD received by the time of appointment, in Latin American Literary and Cultural Studies, or a closely related field within the Arts and Humanities. Responsibilities include research and classroom instruction of undergraduate students.
• A strong record of scholarly research with evident promise for sustained, high-impact academic contributions.
• Full professional fluency in Spanish, with demonstrated experience teaching language and/or literature courses at the university level.
• Ability to teach a broad range of courses, including language instruction and survey courses in Spanish/Latin American literatures and cultural studies.
• Capacity to implement and direct Dartmouth's off-campus programs in Latin America and Spain.
• Proven excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentorship, coupled with evident preparation to serve Dartmouth's commitment to academic excellence in an environment that is welcoming to all.
