Job Description:

The School Nutrition Services Coordinator assists the Director & Assistant Director of the School Nutrition Services to meet the needs of all general and nutrition related needs for the district. Responsibilties include, but are not limited to, ongoing technical nutrition and marketing components of the Office of School Nutrition Services compliance portfolio, including: menu development and review, programmatic monitoring of school meal and child nutrition programs, nutritional analysis, nutrition education, nutrition marketing, event planning & coordination, community partnership development, Dietetic Intern preceptorship, medical dietary accommodations, and development of compliance training materials and programs.

This role will also assist in ensuring compliance with the National School Breakfast Program, National School Lunch Program, Child and Adult Care Food Program, Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program, Summer Meals Program, and Afterschool Snack Program. This is a 12-month, 240 day Support position, reporting to the School Nutrition Leadership.

Qualifications:



  • Education: A Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition, Food Management, Dietetics, or related field.


  • Certificates & Licenses: Registered Dietitian Nutritionist required; SNA certified & Master's degree preferred. SNA certification and/or SNS credentials preferred. Serve Safe Certified within 90 days of hire date.


  • Experience:


    • Job related experience is required. Must possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and has experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders. Exhibits working knowledge of nutritional regulatory compliance and menu development. Ability to execute multiple workstreams in a fast-paced environment. Proficient in computer skills, including MS Office suite. Must be able to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner. Exhibits excellent fact-finding, analysis, and problem-solving skills through critical analysis. Experience in K-12 or Higher Education food service establishments preferred.




Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Ability to maintain good working relationships with administration, staff and students in a team environment. Proven ability to develop and teach nutrition education programs to children and adults. Demonstrated knowledge of computer skills including nutritional analysis/menu software and MS Office.

Nutrition and Menu Planning



  • Reviews menu and performs nutrition analyses & provides recommendations for improvement to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal guidelines and regulations, inclusive of special diet menus, special events, and field trips for ACPS sites for all federal child nutrition programs.
  • Assesses student preferences, industry trends, and current research to plan menus and generate marketing tactics that encourage participation in various programs.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains menu planning & nutrition analysis software and costing for all meal programs.
  • Develops menus for all grade levels according to USDA regulations and utilizing available commodities in partnership with SNS Executive Chef.
  • Assigns and publishes menus and production plans for all menu cycles in the software program.
  • Maintains current nutrition information on all food items.
  • Develops, tests, and evaluates new recipes in partnership with SNS Executive Chef. Conducts taste testing and engages customer feedback for new products.
  • Develops and maintains allergy and ingredient information on all food items and recipes. Communicates information via the division website, School Cafe, and to respective departments throughout the division.
  • Handles parent and/or nurse requests for dietary accommodation requests, nutrition, and/or allergy/ingredient information requests.
  • Manages, designs, and implements medically necessary diet accommodations for students with identified and documented medical conditions.


Procurement



  • Actively researches nutritive food options to include in meal programs. Communicates and meets with vendors for the procurement and marketing of new products.
  • Maintains and updates Master Bid for Prime Vendor annual procurement.
  • Incorporates new food and packaging items into the menu .
  • Assists with commercial and commodity food purchasing and inventories for district and at the school level.
  • Assess equipment needs for smallware, as well as new construction projects, based on projected menu cycles and make recommendations accordingly.
  • Supports the procurement process through market research and other projects as assigned.


Accountability & Compliance



  • Supports all compliance-related functions, including applications, audits, training, reviews, and annual verification as assigned.
  • Tracks various SNS records, including Dietary Accommodation forms for medically necessary diets related to disease management and allergens, Early Childhood Center (ECC) and K-12 production records.
  • Conducts manager training sessions for new hires, annual mandatory training needs, and any other identified needs throughout the year to ensure meal compliance. Develops training materials and conducts nutrition, HACCP Food Safety/Sanitary, child nutrition meal pattern guideline, and food allergy training.
  • Revises and utilizes New Employee Training Handbook as needed.


Marketing



  • Leads marketing and student engagement activities related to the child nutrition programs and special celebrations in partnership with School Nutrition Managers
  • Manages all social media pages and social media content calendar
  • Manages updates to ACPS webpages
  • Leads the development and implementation of a marketing plan to attract students, parents, teachers, administrators, support staff, and community.
  • Develops and implements taste testing and student satisfaction projects in partnership with the Executive Chef
  • Develops marketing materials, including signage and calendar menus, as well as assists with merchandising and food product display in cafeterias
  • Provides guidance to SNS technology personnel with implementation of online meal ordering process and publishing of menus on SchoolCafe
  • Oversees planning of nutrition-related menus and events for National School Breakfast Week, National School Lunch Week, and National Nutrition Month


Nutrition Education



  • Develops nutrition education materials and activities for programs, such as the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program
  • Interprets current scientific information on food, nutrition, diet, and health to Division professionals, parents, agencies, and the public through technical assistance and/or presentation.
  • Provides group nutrition education for the Division including school community groups such as PTA and employee groups, school health fairs, & career days.
  • Writes articles on nutrition for department or district newsletters and contributes to local press as needed.


Community Outreach



  • Builds relationships and collaborates with various internal departments, vendors, and external stakeholders to achieve program success.
  • Travels offsite to schools, agency, and community partners to deepen understanding of the child nutrition programs.
  • Communicates and supports SNS initiatives as assigned.
  • Handles and follows up on inquiries and correspondence from ACPS families and community stakeholders regarding nutrition and compliance actions, policies, and procedures.
  • Actively communicates with community nutrition partners on current campaigns.
  • Serves on the Division Wellness Committee and/or Food Safety Council as directed.
  • Assists Division with nutrition/diet related employee and/or student wellness programs.
  • Plans, implements, and oversees the education of Didactic intern rotations.
  • Works closely with Early Childhood Programming & Virginia Preschool Initiative to establish equipment and diet needs for age specific meal planning.
  • Manages and responds to Parent & community feedback. Meets with parents and/or students as needed.


General



  • Utilizes various computer programs to track data and create presentations, signs, charts, graphs, tables, and memos.
  • Stays up to date on current food and nutrition trends.
  • Actively participates in Grant Program Management
  • Participates in professional development activities that enhance personal growth.



*Requirements for the position include, but are not limited to the maintenance of Registration as a Dietitian recognized by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, menu development, ACPS strategic plan as it relates to nutrition and wellness throughout the district, nutritional analysis, nutrition education, marketing, special diets, employee development and training, maintaining community partnerships, act as preceptor for Dietetic Interns, complying with mandated health standards, and assume additional roles within the Dept. as assigned and as needed.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:



  • Light physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities of administrative nature. *
  • Training personnel: Requires moderate physical activity performing somewhat strenuous activities of primarily product/technical nature.
  • Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift (to 50+ lbs.), carry, pull or push heavy objects or materials. *
  • Experience prolonged standing and working near and around moving mechanical parts. *
  • Must work in a moderate noise environment, with computers, printers, and light traffic. *
  • Air contaminates such as dust, fumes, and/or disagreeable odors.



Compensation:



  • Hourly wage $37.87 to $46.59 an hour, determined from Grade 33 of the ACPS Support Salary Scale


  • FLSA Status: Exempt position - This position is classified as exempt, meaning it is not eligible for overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act.



Clearances:



  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.
  • Public Health Compliance - Must follow safety and health protocols.
