Mandatory Position

This position is designated as 'mandatory' and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the campus as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.
Primary Purpose of Position
This position serves as Lab Operations Coordinator-The primary function of this position is to support undergraduate biology teaching labs including ordering and preparing all materials; preparing media and maintaining cultures needed for teaching labs; managing all safety requirements; setting up laboratory experimental supplies and equipment for student use; troubleshooting lab procedures and protocols, oversight of maintenance, compliance, usage of autoclave system in Klein Hall and Woodward; EHS compliance and safety of teaching labs in Klein Hall; and support for purchasing of teaching and research labs in Klein Hall and Woodward. This position also takes on the role as lead and supervisor with oversight of the introductory biology laboratory, including training and implementation, and training and management of graduate student lab assistants, including assigning and reviewing their work, and oversight and review of undergraduate students in approximately 30 lab sections per year.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of general research experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Job Duties
This position is to manage the undergraduate biology teaching labs by ordering and preparing all materials, preparing media and maintaining cultures needed for teaching labs, managing all safety requirements, setting up laboratory experimental supplies and equipment for student use, and troubleshooting lab procedures and protocols. Must also receive and deliver daily deliveries to the mailroom/offices and to research and teaching laboratories in Klein Hall. Responsible for ensuring the proper installation, maintenance, and validation of autoclave systems, and repair of various lab equipment which may require the use of a pallet jack. This will be conducted in a safe and substantial manner, in accordance with all federal, state, and university policies. Will manage the biology prep room, which requires keeping inventory of supplies and mixing stock solutions. Must have extensive experience with standard biological equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, autoclaves, biosafety cabinets, and water baths, etc., and knowledge of biological techniques and protocols such as microbial culture and gel electrophoresis. This person supervises student workers, assists with coordinating any teaching assistants, develops the curriculum, and communicates with the students. This person may be involved in the supervision of students in laboratory sections. The lab manager will attend TA training sessions and mandatory biohazardous training yearly.
Other Work Responsibilities
Responsible for managing student workers to assist in the preparation of lab materials and supplies, and the set-up and take-down of lab activities.
