Job Function Summary:

Involves provision of laboratory processing services and information for patient diagnosis and treatment by performing laboratory tests in toxicology, chemistry, hematology, immunology, and microbiology laboratories; receiving, typing, testing, and recording blood bank inventories, phlebotomy services, specimen collection, specimen processing and simple processing. Assists with short term specimen storage and shipping.

Custom Scope (customizable, will be used in the job posting/advertisement):

Hospital Laboratory Technicians perform a wide variety of technical procedures in a hospital laboratory or other facility directly involved in patient-care activities; and perform other related duties as required.

The technical determinations made are in one or more fields of hospital or laboratory procedure, and either directly or indirectly yield technical data about patients. The fields include biochemistry, microbiology, hematology, hemodialysis, and may include specialized work in areas such as ophthalmology, dental prosthetics, and pathology. Installation, operation, and maintenance of laboratory equipment and instruments may be a secondary, but essential part of the duties. The primary usage of the technical data yielded is related to direct patient care; however, this data may be used for research purposes secondarily.

Under supervision, the Hospital Laboratory Technician 1 perform repetitive, technical laboratory procedures that require special training and skill typically with theoretical background in one scientific field. Incumbents usually perform duties of limited variety and work under close technical supervision, in their initial assignments. Incumbents may usually expect to advance to Hospital Laboratory Technician II after having demonstrated the ability to perform the full scope of duties, at acceptable levels of quality and quantity, normally required of the operational level in the field of work.

25% Essential Performs basic design, development, modification and debugging of software. Evaluates basic software for functional areas. Analyzes existing software or works to formulate logic for basic systems, prepares basic specifications and performs coding.

Under close supervision, perform limited variety of repetitive standardized tests or procedures.
Receives specimens/materials, ascertains their acceptability against established criteria, investigates incomplete or unacceptable submissions, and provides timely follow-up communication with appropriate individuals/departments/offices when materials are determined to be unacceptable or lack adequate information for billing or clinical processing
May assist with the servicing of equipment and system.
Input data into system.
May assist with installation, operation, and maintenance of laboratory equipment and instruments.
Maintains clean, safe work areas.

Required qualifications/licensure/certifications:

High school graduate
Ability to understand and communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing.
Basic mathematical skills to quickly and accurately add, subtract, divide, and multiply whole numbers and decimals manually or using a calculator
Ability to work independently with good organizational skills.
Ability to work within a team.
Must possess good communication skills.
Ability to think critically and proactively to support the OR team.
Ability to prioritize and multi-task to support multiple Surgeons and staff.
Ability to work in a fast-paced complex environment.
Must be able to see well and read in dim light.
Must have manual dexterity to manipulate small equipment including, but not limited to, twisting bulbs, turning dials, changing batteries, and pushing buttons. Must be able to move in confined spaces. Must be able to repetitively lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds
Ability to satisfactorily perform job duties as defined in the job description.
Willingness to be taught/learn new skills.
