Summary:

Skilled to setup, adjust and operate CNC lathes and/or mills and special types of machine tools. Performs diversified machining operations largely on standard work having tolerance and finish specifications requiring a general knowledge of machining practices and techniques. This position must have the ability to perform the following:

Responsibilities:

  • Works from drawings, sketches and specifications in completing various machining operations.

  • Ability to edit CNC programs to manufacture parts per blueprint/drawings.

  • Performs machine set ups to obtain close tolerances, fitting and alignment of machined parts.

  • Obtains required inspections on first pieces of a run according to prescribed procedure and performs inspections on work-in-progress using a wide variety of measuring devices.

  • Completes and maintains all necessary records of time, part counts, first piece inspections, and requisition forms, etc. for each job.

  • Makes jigs, fixtures or other specialized non-production devices as qualified and assigned.

  • Acquires raw material, supplies, tools, etc. when necessary.

  • Maintains a clean orderly work area, works safely, and conforms to all quality procedures and standards.

  • Performs first piece inspections on basic product for other machinists, as qualified and assigned.

  • Grinds tools when necessary.

  • Performs routine preventative maintenance of machines according to PM schedule.

  • Trouble shoots drawings, machining, tooling, programming, material, etc. and making competent decisions pertaining to job at hand.

  • Maintains and monitors machine shop equipment. Safeguards against improper use and incorrect set ups to prevent extensive damage to machine or specific sections.

  • Detects errors with frequent tolerance/quality checks.

  • May provide training to others.

Minimum required qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Technical training in shop math and blueprint reading

  • 5 years+ of trade school apprenticeship or equivalent shop experience as a machinist

The ideal candidate possesses the following experience, skills, and abilities:

  • Clear communication, both oral and written

  • Organization skills; keep area clean to 5S standards

  • Meets productivity standards by completing work in a timely manner

Mental/Visual/Physical Effort:

  • Walks, stands, reaches, and bends frequently. Periodic lifting of moderate to heavy items may be required. Possesses good hand/eye coordination.

Physical Hazards:

  • Normal operations require eye protection, steel toed footwear, and occasionally hand protection.

Working Conditions:

  • Exposure to normal machine shop environment with periodic noise. Limited disagreeable factors present.
