THE POSITION

The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) is seeking a Custodial Worker 1 who is ready to support the Gino J. Merli Veterans' Center with steady, positive, and enthusiastic service. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports the overall cleanliness and safety of the Gino Merli Veterans Center by performing a wide range of custodial tasks throughout the facility. As a Custodial Worker 1, you will perform the following duties:

  • Deep Cleaning: Perform thorough cleaning of resident rooms, common areas, offices, medical spaces, kitchen areas, vehicles, and public areas
  • General Cleaning: Carry out tasks such as mopping, scrubbing, waxing, polishing, dusting, sweeping, and buffing of surfaces and fixtures
  • Restroom Care: Clean and sanitize all restrooms and restock needed supplies
  • Waste Handling: Empty waste containers, dispose of trash and recyclable materials, and collect infectious waste for proper storage
  • Room Preparation: Clean, sanitize, rearrange, and organize resident rooms prior to occupation and move furniture and equipment as needed
  • Safety and Support: Maintain a safe work environment, report hazards, assist with snow removal, and help train new employees

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week
  • Work hours are 1st shift (6:45 AM to 2:45 PM), with a 30-minute lunch. You will work alternating weekends.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
Preferred Qualifications (not required):
  • Willingness to work in Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania
  • Willingness to work a full-time schedule
  • Willingness to work 6:45AM - 2:45PM
  • Work experience as a custodian, janitor, or cleaning person (Experience might include such things as cleaning restrooms; cleaning resident rooms, offices, or public areas; mopping, scrubbing, dusting, sweeping, and buffing)
  • Work experience in an assisted living facility, nursing home, or hospital
  • Work experience interacting with patients or residents while cleaning in patient or resident rooms or a dining room setting
  • Work experience cleaning bodily fluids and disposing infectious waste into proper storage areas
  • Work experience removing snow, trash, and debris from sidewalks and entrance ways
  • Work experience using and mixing chemicals or solvents
  • Work experience using manual or power equipment to mop, scrub, sweep, strip, wax, and buff floors
  • Custodial work experience in one of the following environments: activity or recreation room, bathroom, shower or bathing room, cafeteria or dining room, entranceway, lobby, common space, nursing station, patient or resident rooms, pharmacy, physical therapy rooms

Legal Requirements:

  • A conditional offer of employment will require a medical examination.
  • This position falls under the provisions of the Older Adult Protective Services Act.
    • Under the Act, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to, PA State Police and FBI clearance.
