I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION
| Job Description Summary: |
The GW Office of Undergraduate Admissions seeks Outside Application Readers (ORs) to review First Year applications for the Fall 2027 admissions cycle. Each OR will read, evaluate, and summarize applications in an assigned caseload and make preliminary admissions recommendations to the Admissions Committee.
The period of service for the OR is late October 2026 (including training) through no later than the end of February 2027. Exact hours per week will vary between non-peak and peak review periods. ORs hired for this role are expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week with the ability to work up to a maximum of 40 hours per week during the peak application review period of January - February. This is an hourly-paid position based on level of experience as an application reviewer for GW, and there are no benefits.
ORs are required to attend virtual paid training sessions in October 2026 (exact dates
TBD). Additional virtual training may be conducted, as needed, beyond the initial training session. After initial training, ORs will have flexibility to read applications on their own weekly schedule, as long as weekly reading goals are reached. ORs will be instructed in GW application evaluation protocols and be expected to thoughtfully apply them to each assigned file. This includes a careful and holistic evaluation of academic records, letters of recommendation, student-written essays, extracurricular commitments and achievements, and standardized test scores, if submitted.
The OR position requires close cooperation with the Undergraduate Admissions Office staff to assist in the review process of applications for admission. Though the OR will work remotely, they will be expected to maintain weekly communication with their supervisor and/or the professional staff member to whom they have been assigned in an evaluation team. Methods of communication may include email, phone/text, Google Chat, and/or other communication application platforms.
Outside Reader Position Requirements
A bachelor's degree is required; previous experience in selective college admissions, experience with Slate and/or knowledge of GW is highly preferred. This position requires strong time management and organizational skills; strong critical thinking skills; independent initiative; and the ability to keep files (and the information they contain) confidential.
Application review is conducted online remotely, and the OR should have high-speed internet and access to Zoom meetings. Each OR will be provided a GW-issued personal computer, and it must be returned once the reading cycle terminates at the end of February 2027. Instructions for returning equipment will be provided.
Proficiency with computers, experience working remotely, data entry, and word processing is required. Candidates must have strong verbal and written English language communication skills
Given the sensitive nature of the admissions selection process, and to avoid any potential conflicts of interest, we will not consider candidates who have close relations with a high school junior or senior applying to college (whether to GW or elsewhere); currently work for a school or program that enrolls high school students; or currently work in the fields of college admissions or school/college counseling including independent college counseling. ORs cannot be currently employed in an exempt-classified position at GW. Candidates who are currently employed elsewhere in a full-time position are eligible to apply but are strongly encouraged to consider the job expectations and demands of peak reading periods, which will often be 20+ hours per week. Successful completion of a Background Screening will be required as a condition of hire. |
| Minimum Qualifications: |
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. |
