Job Family Description

Engineering roles perform engineering work in operations, production, construction, or maintenance environments. They may design and scale up manufacturing processes, instruments and equipment and tests manufactured products to maintain quality. They may plan, design, and estimate time and cost and oversees construction and maintenance of structures, facilities, systems, and components. They analyze and develop solutions to engineering problems related to manufacturing equipment and systems or the causes of component failures. They develop and apply engineering standards and procedures and provide advice on issues within the engineering field.

Discipline Description

Fire Protection Design Engineers perform task analysis, walk-downs, design development and generation of design output for alarm and detection systems, and suppression systems. They provide technical support to site construction forces, start-up & testing, suppliers, or subcontract personnel. They prepare Data Sheets, Statements of Work, Procurement Specifications, Design Build Specifications, and Purchase Requisitions.

Some Typical Duties & Responsibilities Include:

These engineers will report to the SRNS Fire Protection Engineering Organization and will be responsible for fire protection related compliance within various facilities at SRS.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
* Conducting and developing fire hazard analysis.
* Conducting NFPA/ICC code reviews.
* Specifying technical aspects of fire protection systems to ensure Life Safety compliance.
* Performing building walkdowns to assess for compliance according to Department of Energy standards.
* Mentoring and providing direction to less senior engineers within the organization.
* Scoping technical tasks and develop creative solutions to assigned problems.
* Utilizing SRNS systems and meeting SRNS requirements with minimal supervisory guidance.
* Accepting complex tasks and receiving minimal guidance from senior professionals.
* Incorporating conventional engineering or scientific practices and a variety of complex features such as complicated technical requirements, application of new or special materials or processes and difficult coordination or oversight requirements into problem solving and program planning.
* Providing limited guidance and direction to less senior engineering professionals.
* Carrying out development and qualification programs on tasks concurrent with other phases such as design and fabrication to better evaluate and minimize future problems.
* Developing alternate solutions to existing problems.
* Performing all detail work necessary to determine best solutions.
* Evaluating proposals and make recommendations based on proposed projects/tasks in area of assignment.
* Delegating and managing portions of the detail work to less senior personnel.
* Preparing costs and schedule estimates on proposed projects/tasks in assigned area.
* Demonstrating cost and schedule consciousness through timely completion of assigned tasks and projects.
* Preparing manuals and other documents supporting or publicizing the technical effort.
* Demonstrating creative ability through medium of patent disclosures, problem solving, engineering reports, technical papers and articles.

Experienced Fire Protection Engineers should be able to:
* Build and maintain relationships with coworkers outside the field of engineering, this may include operations, maintenance, construction, nuclear and criticality safety, etc.
* Perform tasks both individually and as members of cross-functional teams.
* Lead cross-functional teams and drive the work tasks to completion.
* Manage time effectively and balance working on multiple projects, technical documents, etc. concurrently.
* Communicate complex topics in language fitting for the audience.
* Originate and edit written technical documents.
* Provide direction and guidance to less senior fire protection engineers.
* Implements programs and procedures to ensure employee and facility safety is in accordance with codes and standards including DOE standards, ICC codes and NFPA Code and Standard requirements.
* Fire Scenario Documentation for nuclear and non-nuclear facilities to prevent fire and determine controls that protect personnel, facilities, and the environment from the effects of a fire.
* Maintains current knowledge of building and fire protection codes and regulations to assure compliance.
* Surveys facilities to determine potential fire hazards and recommends corrective action.
* Reviews and approves the more complex documents required for new construction or modification of existing facilities to determine appropriate fire prevention.
* Specify and monitor inspection, testing and maintenance of fire protection systems and equipment to ensure that in an emergency they operate and perform to applicable codes and standards.
* Participates in the investigation of all facets of any fire to determine the origin, cause, and what, if any, breakdown in the fire protection plans and procedures may have occurred.

Required Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in an engineering or relevant field plus at least five years of experience (YOE) in a relevant role, OR Master's degree in relevant field plus at least two years of experience (YOE), OR Doctoral degree in relevant field
* Equivalencies to experience and education requirements will be considered

We'd Also Like to See

* Degrees/Disciplines: Fire Protection Engineering or Registered Professional Engineer in Fire Protection. Mechanical Engineering with Fire Protection experience.

* Graduate of an accredited fire protection engineering curriculum OR Registered Professional Engineer in Fire Protection OR Full member in the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) OR NICET Level III certification in the applicable subfield is preferred.

* Previous SRS Design Engineering or DOE facility experience is preferred.

* Demonstrate Fire Protection design experience in the nuclear or chemical process industry and possess a working knowledge of Codes and Standards applicable to fire detection and alarm systems, such as NFPA 70, NFPA 72, NFPA 90A, NFPA 101, IBC, and various other ISA and IEEE standards.

* Proficient using 2D Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software, MicroStation is a plus.

* Understands and applies advanced knowledge of discipline's standard theories, concepts, principles and techniques

* Working knowledge of standard engineering/scientific practices and applications

Security Clearance Information

SRNS is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, criminal records, and employment history, and education verifications. Positions with SRNS may require applicants to obtain and maintain a DOE L or Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. Factors such as pre-employment background review results, dual citizenship status, and unpaid and/or unfiled taxes may impact your ability to obtain a security clearance.
