Overview

General Obstetrics & Gynecology nurse practitioners' function in an expanded nursing role and perform selected tasks and services previously within the province of medicine as well as tasks that fall within the province of nursing. Nursing and medicine must maintain ongoing collaboration in education and practice so that the nurse practitioner is maximally effective in meeting the primary health-care needs of women. When performing nursing aspects of this role, the practitioner must have the opportunity to engage in independent as well as co-operative decision making. When performing expanded aspects of the role that overlap with medicine, the practitioner must function in collaboration with qualified physicians within the framework of jointly approved guidelines. Nurse practitioners not only must be prepared and competent to apply additional knowledge and skills, but also must be ready and willing to accept responsibility and accountability for their practice. Primary care is provided at all levels of the health-care system, but predominately in an ambulatory setting. The obstetric-gynecologic/women's health nurse practitioner provides such care in collaboration with physicians, as well as with other members of the health-care team. Position supports all office locations. Practitioner will be required to travel between all office locations.



Responsibilities

    Obtain a complete health, psychosocial, obstetric, and gynecologic history and record findings in a systematic, accurate, and succinct form
  • Perform a complete physical examination, with specific emphasis on the reproductive system
  • Order, perform, and interpret routine laboratory tests
  • Develop and implement plans for health promotion and health maintenance, including plans for disease prevention and provision of health education and counseling
  • Provide periodic health assessment of normal, non-pregnant, and asymptomatic women
  • Provide clinical management of women having gynecologic problems
  • Provide assessment, education, and management for family planning and fertility control
  • Provide prenatal care for women with pregnancies, giving attention to both maternal and fetal health
  • Provide postpartum care, including attention to parent and infant relationships, for women who have had pregnancies
  • Provide health education and counseling, with emphasis on physical and psychosocial dimensions of adolescence, sexuality, childbearing, parenting, climacteric, aging, and family life
  • Co-manage care for patients with selected health complications in collaboration with the physician
  • Arrange referrals to other members of the health-care team as needed and to community resources as appropriate
  • Monitor and make recommendations to nursing policy and procedure manual to include development of nursing protocols and procedures for same.
  • Partner with the Division Director, Department Administrator and Practice Manager on quality standards, meaningful use, clinical workflows, nursing education and the delivery of exceptional patient care.
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Qualifications

MSN with a nurse practitioner focus is required.

Must be a licensed RN by the Virginia Board of Nursing and a certified nurse practitioner.

Experience as a Nurse Practitioner or a Physician Assistant with obstetric patients is preferred but not required.
