The UT System Administration is primarily based in Austin, Texas. Purpose of Position

Responsible for the evaluation, design, optimization, and troubleshooting of complex IT platforms, networks, application systems and related services. Advises management and team members on strategies and recommendations for services across the IT platform and related operations.

Essential Functions

  • Proactively monitor and manage various IT platforms, networks, application systems and related services. Provide expertise in troubleshooting, modifying, and optimizing platforms, networks, and application systems, including coordination among internal and external customers, vendors, and agencies as needed.
  • Research, evaluate and design IT solutions for business needs as they arise, providing detailed documentation as needed. Designs/plans for the expansion or enhancement of the IT platforms, networks, application systems and related infrastructure.
  • Provide informal training and guidance to colleagues and customers in support of the UT System goal of continuous improvement.
  • Maintain infrastructure including patches and upgrades for enhancement or security. Infrastructure includes: logical and physical devices plus servers, storage, firewalls and networking equipment. Partner with information security team to help ensure a strong security posture for server patching, endpoints and networking infrastructure.
  • Evaluate and test new technology for feasibility and implementation at System Administration.
  • Lead infrastructure projects, which include installation and documentation of new hardware or software, configuration and design. Provide guidance, work direction and information to other technical team members on a collaborative basis.
  • Troubleshoot infrastructure problems. Analyze the problem, identify the cause of problem and implement a timely solution. Consult with vendor technicians. Perform administrative duties such as creating reports and maintaining schedules.
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and seven or more years of broad infrastructure experience OR high school diploma/GED and ten years of broad infrastructure experience in designing, installing, and maintaining IT platforms, networks, application systems and related services.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of network topologies and technologies (IP Addressing, VLANs, Wireless & Wireless Protocols like 802.11, Routing & Routing Protocols like BGP, OSPF)
  • Strong understanding of protocols (BGP, OSPF, 802.11, RADIUS, QoS, IPSEC)
  • Strong familiarity with enterprise IT equipment (e.g., Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto)
  • Strong familiarity with physical and virtual servers (e.g. VMWare, Hyper-V)
  • Familiarity with Storage Solutions (e.g. Dell PowerVault)
  • Familiarity with Microsoft-centric infrastructure (Active Directory, Azure AD, Windows Servers)
  • Industry certifications from Juniper, Cisco, Microsoft, VMware, CompTIA, or equivalent

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to a minimum of 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

A background check will be conducted on candidates under final consideration.
