About the Department and/or College

Texas Tech University Libraries serve as a vital partner with students and faculty in their learning endeavors. The University Libraries' system comprises: (1) University Library, (2) Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library,(3) Architecture Library, and (4) Peters Family Legacy Library within the Student Enrichment Center. The University Library is a patent and trademark depository and is one of two regional depositories for U.S. government documents in Texas. The central focus of the Texas Tech University Libraries is to make available 3.72 million physical volumes, electronic resources, special collections and archives, and to offer services to students and faculty that enable academic and research success.

Major/Essential Functions


  • Provide service to the Texas Tech community at the Library Makerspace, VR Lab, and through any virtual service points by answering questions, assisting patrons with constructing 3D designs, providing troubleshooting, promoting Library resources, and contributing to usage statistics.
  • Assist Libraries patrons with the hardware and software found in the Emerging Technology areas, with a focus on sewing, knitting, textile, Cricut, laser cutting, and 3D printing services.
  • Instruct the Libraries' patrons on makerspace technology during point-of-service interactions and during workshop or outreach demonstrations. Instruction may often include creating and developing teaching materials, handouts, and online resources for patron use.
  • Maintaining the Emerging Technology hardware and software for optimal performance. This will require learning about the technology, performing troubleshooting, and working with the Libraries' faculty and staff to resolve issues.
  • Assist with the scheduling and organization of instruction spaces used by the Emerging Technology personnel.
  • Adhere to all appropriate institutional policies of Texas Tech University, Texas Tech University Libraries, and internal departmental policies.
  • Work with the Emerging Technology faculty and staff to hire and train student assistants as needed to provide consistent, quality service.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Training or experience in maintaining computer hardware and software through education or experience.
  • Specific technical skills related to graphic design, maintaining maker equipment, and willingness to learn new technology as appropriate to the area.
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with Library student assistants, staff, and faculty.
  • Communicate and present ideas effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Exercise judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.
  • Plan and organize effectively, prioritize goals, use time efficiently, and stay on task.

Required Qualifications

Bachelors' degree in related field and four years library experience; knowledge and competencies of Microsoft Office. Relevant specialized work experience may substitute for education on a year for year basis. Additional job related education may substitute for required experience on a year for year basis. Ability to learn and work with computer applications unique to libraries or archives. Excellent customer services skills. Ability to follow library policies and procedures

Preferred Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree with coursework in computer science, engineering, art, design or other related area OR a combination of related education and/or experience.
  • Familiarity with graphic design software; using fabric and textile creation tools and machines; customer service or public speaking experience.
